I think these episodes are some of the best episodes in OP from a character depth and growth perspective. For character depth we start to get to see how ever since Baratie Sanji has had this tendency to sacrifice himself to save other people and while it is because he is at heart a kind person, his background from this arc is also starting to show how he does not see himself as worthy of being saved. He sacrifices himself because he believes the people his saves in doing it always have "more value" than he does. It really starts to show the darker part of some of what people consider Sanji's good points. Like Sanji giving himself up is essentially Sanji's version of Robin at Water 7 where he sees so little value in himself that he thinks the trouble turning down this marriage would cause Luffy with Big Mom is not worth more than him as a Straw Hat. So sad to see Sanji devalue himself this much and it finally clicking that he has, to a certain extent, been doing this all along. And for the character growth we obviously see it in Luffy. I find it crazy that after people have seen this arc they still say Luffy hasn't matured at all. I think people get character growth confused with changing the core of a character. Luffy will always be the goofy, excitable clown that he is, but just look at how he handled this conflict with Sanji compared to how he handled the conflict with Usopp back in Water 7. I think it is pretty easy to say that if Luffy had not experienced that fight with Usopp and learning that while he was right, he did not handle it correctly, he would definitely not been able to handle this Sanji conflict so well. I think it is also interesting and not a coincidence that the person who stopped Luffy from saying some wild shit at Water 7 during the argument was also Sanji.

2024-10-18 17:18:02 +0000 UTCreally hate the Vinsmokes. And I absolutey love this arc. WCI is in my top 5 arcs for One Piece. The only issue I have is that the Sanji backstory/arc happened so late that some people who are full One Piece fans are so set in their Sanji hate or anti-simp Sanji takes that this arc didn't change their mind at all which is crazy. As much as I love Zoro I find it crazy that people still talk about Zoro being a more complex character than Sanji. Like guys you are missing the point that Luffy and Zoro are by design not complex and that is a good thing for a group of characters this diverse.
