I don’t think any people let alone myself at this point are thinking that Luffy is the next pirate king and that he’s special because he’s Roger’s successor. That basically reduces Luffy to what…nothing? Hahaha I’ve said all throughout these videos too that Luffy is special because of who he is and the skills that he has. Skills in looking past peoples’ drama, the ability to make unlikely friendships out of nothing, and more so than anything, his resolve to secure his own freedom and the freedom of those he cares about. Haki, the D. all the other things are extras that are fun to piece together, but they don’t make Luffy LUFFY. They’re not unique to him and not what make him at all. I don’t think I’ve ever assumed or said that he was reduced to that level either. I mean naturally I’m going to have fun trying to put together “WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!” it’s a first watch, and you watch a reaction back with a shit ton of context so it’s really easy I think to be like “well this doesn’t mean xyz”, but approaching this world and making sense of it on the first run perfectly is near impossible, let alone a huge task in itself. For future reference though one thing everyone can take from this is that I’ve never thought of the One Piece characters and never WILL think of the characters especially the Strawhats as just their abilities and that’s it. They’re complex, super relatable yet simultaneously simple characters that are really cool and contain a lot of depth if you want to see it. An ability or some letter in his name won’t make Luffy the pirate king, he’ll be that because he: 1. Wants to 2. Wants to 3. Wants to 🤣🤣 He’s said so many times too he can’t do it without his crew either - like no ability or Haki or whatever can compensate for the loss of a team member. If so, why are we going all the way to whole cake to pick up Sanji? Anyway - I might not have to say it every time we talk about it but yes, Luffy will be the pirate king because he as a character is special and his path to the one piece is unique - doesn’t matter whether it’s treacherous, goofy or honorable. There’s no “right way” to get to Laugh Tale, and Luffy is doing it his way in his order. If he was simply just a mirror or Roger he’d follow his footsteps and be a Roger clone, which he’s not.

To me, Luffy having Haki or a D. or being able to hear voices are just cool little extras. None of those things are what make Luffy special really or what ties him to Roger. Its all about the personality and the emotions behind it imo that make Luffy special. Like intead of it being "Luffy is special because he will be next Pirate King/ Roger's successor" its more to say that "Luffy will be able to become Pirate King/ Roger's successor because of how special his personality/mentality is"

2024-08-31 17:17:33 +0000 UTCI also wonder how Luffy---or those who got a D on them is connected with Roger. But it is also crazy to think how both Luffy and Momo can hear Zunesha's voice. If I remember correctly, in Fishman Island, there's a brief flashback story wherein Roger can hear the sea kings' voices. I wonder if those two abilities are connected too.

He has D. in his name, and more than anything, as far as we know Luffy is destined to become the second King Of The Pirates, with Roger having been the only one before him. I’m not talking specifically parents or blood - it’s pretty obvious at this point that the Straw Hats themselves are the biggest living example that the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. Whether related by blood or not, they both strive for freedom and share similar ideals. Luffy goes about things his own way but almost everyone he has come across including Roger’s crew say that he reminds them of the previous pirate king in one way or another OR that Luffy is the only person besides Roger to have known XYZ or had ABC trust him. Let people theorise man 🤣🤣🤣

2024-08-30 22:36:09 +0000 UTCI think people need to get past the idea that Luffy is somehow related to Roger. The whole Ace background was designed to take up that space and prove that ultimately who your parents are shouldn't matter. It would go against one of the core principles of this series to have Luffy related to Roger by blood and have all his accomplishments as a character tied to him as the "inheritor" or "reincarnation" of Roger.
