Also as someone who didn't play the game, my understanding is that it isn't every infected is just outright interconnected, its the fungus/cordyceps on the ground or the environment that are active/alive still that are the network. Those infected we saw lying on the ground were covered in fungus or touching fungus that was alive, and when Joel killed that last infected, its hand landed on cordyceps and informed the network that something is here and the network woke up the other infected to investigate(?) I assume
