so I wasn't sure if anyone ever explained the Smiley situation and the fruit to you, because it is portrayed a little better in the manga than in the anime. I don't think they ever really go over it but essentially: Smiley was a Zoan fruit eater who ate the axolotl fruit and through Caesar's experiments was turned into a weird slime. So when Smiley eats the candy he essentially dies and turns into the gas, and the bag of fruit was placed there to so that one of the fruits in the bag would catch the "devil"/spirit of the devil fruit to reside in another fruit. This way Caesar could do the experiment over again with whoever he forces to eat the axolotl fruit and experiments on. I think outside of the fruit that Momo eats, no artificial fruit we have seen ever has the curve design of natural devil fruits. All the artificial "Smile" fruits just have weird spots on them instead
