I’ve been following Melanie Little covering the Karen Read trial and have pretty much agreed with her coverage but she is totally defending Richard Allen🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ I can’t even watch her anymore! Then there’s Attorney Andrea Burkhart 💯% defending RA. She’s even volunteering to help with his appeal!! I can’t watch her either. So I will be watching Hidden True Crime on the RA case. Can’t wait for you to cover the sentencing and what’s in the gag order once it’s released. I would love for you to turn the threats you’ve received in to LE. They should be prosecuted. I just got caught up on the verdict and I wanted to take the chance to thank both of you for your coverage and braving the (to me unexpected) storms that came with it. Lauren, you did phenomenal! I'm still dazzled by your ability to take so accurate and detailed notes (in another life, you could have been an outstanding court-reporter) and relating them to us after each long and challenging day. Maybe some day you might reveal your secret to note taking to us?? ;-) And to Dr. John I want to say thank you so much for the bigger context you offer on a case that, at first glance, seems just too tragic to even contemplate motives and history and how this fits into our world. Because, unfortunately, it does, it has to. And btw after Dr. John's reference to Oedipus Rex I went and watched the current production of the play (an adaptation) in London. I watched BM and AB this whole trial but thought they were biased for the defense. AB now seems to want to plant in people's minds reasonable doubt about Brian Kolberger's case, which is unbelievable to me! She has managed to brainwash G from Grizzly True Crime on the Delphi case, but I don't think she will manage to do so in the Idaho 4 case (hopefully), because she can be really manipulative with her words. One speech from her and it can leave your head spinning!

Profiler Pat Brown mentioned something about a cousin of hers who committed suicide and had what her mother called "short man syndrome" in her channel on a video about RA, too, also I had a very short guy (he'd be tiny in any Asian country today) who I rejected in HS, who was very creepy (tried to kiss me even after I rejected his advances) he went on to hate me and spread rumors for the rest of my four years there, even though I was 13, and even if I were attracted to him, I am a timid autistic person who would only get a real boyfriend at 21! I don't want to generalize, but I think some short guys really grow to resent women.

Lauren, you will always be my favorite puffer b. In the most loving funny sense. Seriously you and John make the "stranger in to the woods" part of the world more open to daylight. As horrendous as it is, it is better to see it for what it is. That Richard Allen is the small, little, sad embodiment of evil. It points to something that I have always felt that after all, evil is banal. Just banal and ugly. That is what is hard to believe. A kind of "Is that all there is?" feel to it. That these poor little girls did not deserve to be characters in a psychodrama. That their sweet lives paid for a sad little dependent misfit's hurt and rage. But our need for it to have meant more or be more dramatic makes it harder to see. Psychologically it makes sense. There are damaged people whose actions have horrific consequences. I do not see him as a psychopath though. John, what is your opinion on that? There may be a little flavor of sociopathy in his psychoses while confined IF he was staging it. But I tend to think eating feces as a tool of performance is something not often seen. Or maybe it happens. I don't know. Then there is the remorse, stated repeatedly. I do not see lack of conscience. Thank you guys. And thanks for the deeper meaning explanation, John. That is what I like about your analyses. Your willingness to go to Oedipus, Freddy Krueger, little Red Riding Hood to make more sense of the sad horrors of life.

I think both of them were undressed, and Abby lost some of her clothes when they crossed the creek I think he injured Libby first, but not yet lethal. She was grabbing her wound while he attacked Abby. I think he allowed Abby to dress because her body looked much younger compared to Libby's. She had lost her clothes on the creek, that’s why she was wearing Libby’s. He said he thought they were older and only realized how young they were when they were naked. Abby didn’t touch her wound because she was lying on her stomach- the same way suspects are held down when police arrest them- that's the only thing that would make sense. After that, he attacked Libby again. Just as he said “he made sure they were dead”

Thank you Lauren and John. It was a journey living this trial through your coverage on YouTube. It is hard to see all the defense attorneys coverage and their rabid followers. Reminds me of the Salem witch trials. I have no doubt of his guilt. As soon as I saw the arrest photo of RA he looked like BG. Really the first sketch was pretty good as well. I am a survivor of an attack from a man I thought was creepy at the AMPM down from my house at 13 years old. Also my best friend was also there. We got away. It was in the middle of a suburban neighborhood just after dark. I can tell you I had a perfect image of the perpetrators nose and profile. I got the color of the shirt wrong and type of pants as well. My friend actually did better with the clothes. I got the age wrong but I got the car right. That is how the officers caught him. Then in the line up it was easy. All I am pointing out is working with a sketch artist is so hard. But the eyes and nose of the sketches and RA look alike. Also when you look at the height of tree tops on the bridge, he doesn’t look much taller if any taller than Abby on bridge. Lastly, I was touched inappropriately like so many other girls by a family friend while I was sleeping. I was awake but continued to pretend I was sleeping. Strangely I never wanted to tell anyone. In fact I would have been mortified if it got out to anyone else. I blocked it from my mind after I wrote it in my diary. I forgot about the incident until I looked at my diary 30 years later. RA’s daughter I bet never told anyone. It would have been to mortified. Thank you for covering this trial.

Your comments and opinions made it make sense. I wanted him to be innocent and on the other hand wanted the girls to have justice. Not seeing the trial I don’t think I got all details as I listened to your you tube it came together. On your last you tube I had to come here to be able to hear all the rest of what you had to say. It felt heavy to me daily and I think it will be a bit before I can watch another. I have a 12 yr old girl. My daughter would do what ever an adult with a gun wanted her to. Without Hidden reporting verbatim what happened in court I would have never fully trusted any verdict drawn from such secretive court proceedings. Yes, there are absolutely crazy people out there. Moreso in this case than any other I’ve seen. I’ve worked a lot of armed security at high risk facilities and have come into contact with many of these people. But specific to the Delphi case, yes, there are many people that seem to be convinced that little Ricky is innocent and they’re willing to commit acts of violence to prove their point. For some reason, defense attorneys that run their own YouTube channels are having a really bad impact on this.

I am very interested to hear more of Dr. John’s thoughts on why the Delphi case has become so polarizing. I find that aspect of all this fascinating. I can’t imagine the the closed off nature of the trial helped matters, but I watch plenty to know that if that was the judge’s prerogative, then she had every right to keep cameras out. I noticed that there is this campaign to compare Richard Allen to Karen Read, and what’s been going on in Massachusetts. If anybody is familiar with the Karen Read trial, and the alleged corruption of the Commonwealth, then you might understand why this comparison is ludicrous. This is my personal opinion, but I do believe that Karen Read has been framed. But the thing is, there is plenty of evidence to suggest a motive as to why there could be a coverup in the John O’Keefe case. I find a hard time understanding what the motives of the Delphi police might have, especially when you compare what actually took place. Richard Allen was charged with kidnap, sex crimes, and double murder. Karen was charged with drunk driving manslaughter. Those are glaringly different.

I find it absolutely outrageous that a lawyer, or lawyers would pass notes to anyone, excluding possible family or assistants..even more outrageous that it was a You Tuber. Beyond that he exclaims he will be "using" YT members to push his initiative. I'm blown away with his thinking and truly believe we will need a order from the Judge saying that lawyers are not to watch or solicit info ( or entice a riot) which is very real possibility..to me anyways. Those hate emails are also confusing. You don't push your narrative or any narrative in my opinion. Question for John: what would be the main demarcation points between DPD and OCPD (not OCD) or even vulnerable/covert NPD? They all stem from attachment trauma, and I’m just curious if there is another diagnosis that fits more closely. On the PAI plus and the PDS my ex husband scored strongly for NPD and OCPD traits; (PAI invalidated as “false good” profile) and both scores on the PDS being clinical, with the SDE being pathological (86). Now a few years later away from the divorce trauma, I lean more towards OCPD.

I got very frustrated listening to Lauren’s (great btw) coverage because I felt there was so much misunderstanding, including how we diagnose psychosis, and the definition of solitary confinement. They needed you on the stand to explain things! Thank you for your clear, logical and I believe accurate analysis. And thank you so much Lauren for making the sacrifices you did to be there to bring us detailed coverage. Btw I am a medical doctor with a graduate degree in psychology/neuroscience. Lauren, I came from a physical and metal abuse home. Reading body language has became apart of ver·bi·age language ii learned read as to Z! Be Blessed Scotwhen it was okay to stay or run. Your face language along with your body language. Was very concerning to me. I knew without knowings that something wasn’t right. I listened to your show before Lauren left for Delphi and what John was saying made so much sense to me. I enjoyed the nightly recaps and the timeline started making more sense. I believe the jury reached the correct verdict. I was the most interested in hearing that Lauren believed Richard Allen sounded like bridge guy. These Defense attorneys are looking for their Jose Baez moment. They’re expecting to make money off the backs of two murdered children. The YouTube creators now pushing the idea that they have great odds of a post conviction appeal are not being honest. Judge Gull actually gave the Defense a fair amount of leeway to defend their client. So much so that she of allowed them to show the hours of video of RA being “abused” and being “psychotic” while not allowing the state to introduce testimony and evidence of RA being violent and threatening the guards. His rights were not violated. There are zero grounds for a successful appeal. He will spend the rest of his life in prison where he belongs.

I have to respectfully disagree. He didn’t get a chance to rape them, so there was never doing to be dna evidence. Also, the crime was committed in the woods where, swabbing trees and the ground isn’t going to produce much dna evidence. Plus he had 7 years to clean up any evidence in his car or on his clothing. Unfortunately, this isn’t CSI where everything fits perfectly. I think when people telll us who they are we should believe them. I think Richard Allen was telling us who he is with his 61 confessions.

I don't think Richard Allen was psychotic, but I think a lot of the people who want to free him act psychotic. I go on social media and most of the posts I see are about ''poor Richard''. Abby and Libby are the victims here. The amount of victim shaming I saw in this case, made me lose my faith in humanity. I never thought we would reach a point in society where people proudly advocate for a child murderer to be freed. I can't imagine how this must feel for Abby and Libby's families. People should have a closer look at the creators they follow, one of the creators in Delphi did work with Chris Watt's parents after he had confessed- and tried to tell the public that he was innocent. I wish people would stop encouraging Richard Allen's wife ''to fight''.She is in a state of denial. She doesn't allow him to take responsibility. And all those creators who encourage her, only fuel her denial. Someone should sit her down, and talk to her straight about the facts. Richard Allen has to take responsibility for what he did, and Kathy Allen needs to face reality and allow him to do it.

The actions of RA makes me think of a time last year after I went on a neighborhood hike much like the Monon trail. There was a man who was at the bath house who made me feel super uncomfortable just by the way he looked right into me. I don’t get uncomfortable that easy but I am super aware. In 2016, there was a horrific quadruple murder that happened in my community - committed by 1 man against 4 adults - 3 men, 1 woman - in a matter of 15 minutes. At ~48 min Dr. John describes the deeply human fear of the killer in the woods as a common storyline through Western literature & history. Great points and wisdom as always. But then he says we don't like to see that and know there is nothing we can do to stop the RA type predators in the world. Here I 100% disagee, which is rare with Dr. John! If RA had not had a gun the likelihood he would have been bold enough to do this and also that at least one of the girls could have run or screamed just seeing a knife - much higher. Reducing child abuse though robust social supports and legal systems is another. There are so many positive policies as examples around the world to reduce harm and violence. Unfortunately far too many people in the USA tolerate clearly dangerous-to-society laws and disinvestment. This can change. I want to have hope for a safer healthier future, not fatalism. There are numerous legal and social policy and investments we could make as a society. If we think there is nothing to do to stop it, we lose.

You make some really good points. I had not thought about the pharmacy worker relevance. I had exactly the same thoughts about RA's potential as a serial abuser and killer. I asked in a YT Superchat if Dr. John thinks he would be likely to reoffend if he had been acquitted but was indeed the killer (which after all the evidence I believe). Dr. John didn't answer right then, I hope if they cover the case more he will discuss this. Everyone in Delphi should be sleeping better now thaf he is convicted. Crimes like this are rare, may nothing similar happen to town residents. That said, abuse of women and children in the USA of rampant and there are likely a lot of SA victims suffering. Stranger danger like this crime is rare, it's the "regular dudes" inside the house that are the most likely to harm. And this is precisely what most of us still do not want to acknowledge or believe.

About the Jacket. In my thoughts no blood was found on it because it's a replacement. He destroyed the original and bought a new one so Kathy wouldn't notice it missing. Also no blood on him probabilities. This is a psychopath. He had planned and thought about it, he is also slightly OCD so he is going to be detailed oriented. He could have easily, like they suspected Jack the Ripper of, position himself on the right side of the body and cut left to right to avoid the spray. Aside from the box knife he did not ever have to touch them and that eliminates DNA transfer. I also have no doubt he had rubber medical gloves in his pocket. He worked in a pharmacy, duh. So it would be evident that he used gloves to fondle. He isn't stupid. Remember he watched dateline. I also have no doubt he listened or watched true crime and took notes on what got people caught. This was methodical. He may have an attachment disorder and I would go so far as to say "Indescriminate" attachment disorder. He attaches himself to whomever he deems "safe" his wife, his mom, and later Dr. Wala. That doesn't give him a handicap to not be a gaslighter, or manipulative. I stand firm he is a psychopath. He would have done this again. Libby and Abby were the first of many and it was sloppy, he did get the DNA down. But he didn't think it through enough about the possibility of a phone, the hidden drive of webers, etc. He placed himself as a "witness" classic psychopathic behavior same as watching the case, which he had multiple times Google searched updates, a serial killer likes to see their work and follow the hunt for then closely. After the first kill, they begin to perfect their method each murder after. It will generally get more savage as the thrill has to be fed. Like drugs or alcohol. It's an addiction and they need more and more. In closing RA has the signs of being a serial murderer, he is where he needs to be. I pray he doesn't win an appeal. Especially if the odenism theory is admitted. I do not know the conspiracy behind it, don't care. This was done by someone who planned this, acted on it, and got caught, thankfully before this became a spree. As for Kathy I don't know enough about her to say why she would defend him, but there are 3 different forms of Stockholm syndrome. They both fed of each other. Like Bonnie and Clyde, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. NOT to say she would have became involved but she definitely would enabled his behavior.

Really fascinating discussion. I agree that people don’t want to look at the truth of the situation - it feels easier to believe in corruption and conspiracy, as at least that feels tangible in a sense, something you can fight against, and of course in some situations is a real thing. But the idea of a “regular” guy who kills two innocent girls for no reason we can logically fathom, that is terrifying and difficult to wrap your mind around. How does one fight or protect against that? This was one of the first cases that kept me up at night, and probably will continue to do so. The banality of evil, it is very unsettling to face. Thank you for the enlightening conversation as always.

I can’t believe people think it would have needed 2 or more people. They are children. They are not going to put up much of a fight against a man. RA worked at CVS, he most probably lifted heavy boxes and was strong. They didn’t stand a chance. There are so many scenarios on how he could overpower both of them but they are too horrific to think about. Also the rubbish about Abby’s boyfriend’s Dad. On the video if either girl knew BG they would have either said his name or not taken a video at all. They felt threatened by a single stranger. If there were 2 people smart Libby would have filmed them both. Finally the iPhone stuff about it being plugged in. Those old iPhones were trash and they were always coming up with errors, turning themselves off and on. So that was a red herring as well. I am just so glad that Odinism trash wasn’t brought in.

It occurred to me today that we never heard any evidence that RA retracted his confessions by any of the means that he made his confessions (to his psychologist, on the phone to Kathy and his mom, or in writing). I’m assuming he had to plead not guilty at some point. Did he say “not guilty” himself or did his attorneys enter his plea for him? Was his plea entered early on at an arraignment before he ever made the confessions, or after? Do we know if he EVER has retracted his confessions? Or is he just remaining silent about it and letting his defense attorneys do what they are telling him to let them do? If he hasn’t even retracted his confessions, that seems pretty telling and…odd. I just would have thought the defense would have brought it as evidence if RA had made retraction statements — something like: “I was confused in psychosis but now I’m better and I want to set the record straight that I didn’t do it”. I know if I had made dozens of false confessions because I wasn’t in touch with reality, I definitely would have been screaming from the rooftops to set the record straight once I was in my right mind again. But we never really heard anything but crickets from him, is that correct?

Dr. John had said something on a previous day about how RA may have looked to his psychologist as a trusted person to relate to in that similar dependent relationship style, but he wouldn’t have transferred his dependence on Kathy to his psychologist. Kathy would still be his primary “rock” that he feels dependent on. It’s occurred to me that we saw a lot of evidence that he confessed (even in writing), but we never saw any evidence presented by the defense that RA retracted his confessions. To my knowledge, he didn’t say it to his psychologist, to Kathy or his mom in phone calls, or in writing. It’s almost like he just went along with Kathy and the Defense telling him to fight the charges (I assume he had to give a not guilty plea at some point, but I think even the lawyers do that for their client sometimes so maybe he didn’t have to? Not sure.)

He said he drank 3 beers just before he did it. I’m sure that lowered his inhibitions and anxiety. And I think he MUST have been angry about something, which can make people commit impulsive violent crimes. The reason I think he was angry is that his parents wanted him to go to lunch with them but he said no and instead went to go get drunk and try to SA somebody in what can only be described as a disorganized crime. I think he must have had a lot of repressed anger…always feeling self-loathing and going along with what other people told him to do (dependent personality disorder). Just because he’s dependent doesn’t mean some part of him isn’t repressing a lot of anger at himself and anger for being told what to do all the time.

I remember, in the Josh Duggar scandal where he molested multiple sisters and a family friend, there were a couple of the sisters that weren’t even aware of what had happened until they were told. They said it was because he was doing “inappropriate touching” when they were asleep. He actually confessed to his parents as a teen out of guilt and they made him apologize to the girls, which is probably the only reason they know (that’s based on the girls’ words in interviews as adults).

The hate in that email reflects the jealousy and miserable life of the writer. It's not based in reality. Until today, I thought he was not guilty, but I truly listened to not only the FACTS you reported, Dr. John's analyses, and other trustworthy sources reporting facts. I then pondered all of this and did my own research, analysis of the facts and post-conviction reactions and I did change my mind from not guilty to guilty. NOT because you guys "convinced" me, but because you presented the facts and valid explanation from a psych perspective and gave me a chance to pull myself away from the crowd and think for myself.

Something that really caught my attention was the fact that when Richard Allen would ask Kathy Allen, if she would still love him if he was guilty, she didn’t really ever say. Whereas his mother immediately said, of course, I will always love you. As a mother, I feel that is exactly what she is supposed to feel, meaning Richard‘s mother. I don’t know what’s going on with Kathy and Richard, but I was like, that’s way too big of an ask for your wife, or really any person on this earth other than your parents.

Q: With RA being diagnosed with dependent personality disorder and being "separated" from his wife and mother, could he have transferred his dependency to his doctors and guards? Would he have wanted to please them and confessed? Gaining their acceptance by being truthful? Him couching some confessions with "I think" is him distancing himself from his crime and testing the waters. He can confess and then sort of back it off but still assuage a guilty conscience.

I think a lot of people imagine that two girls would be able to fight RA off and perhaps they could have done so. Few people know how they would react in such a situation, but I imagine the threat of harm to a friend further complicates everything. Naked in the woods increases that vulnerability to unimaginable levels. Abby and Libby bring brave enough to take the video and hide the phone makes me so proud of them and more heartbroken.

I do hope you can interview some people willing to talk about his personality, if there was a reason he left WalMart, etc. More background, things not necessarily brought up in trial but things known in the community. Certainly whoever "cleared" RA at the beginning after he came in to give his statement about being there during the exact timeframe of the crimes made a gross error. Imagine if instead the team had followed up immediately vs letting so much time pass and time to destroy evidence. That said, as Dr. John often says, then what is your alternative plausible theory of the case? After listening to so much of this, I see none. Missing pieces and some questions, sure. Reasonable doubt after all the trial evidence? For me, none.

I firmly believe that he is guilty but I appreciate your words. I have been bothered by the judges actions in a lot of this case. I also have an issue with how he was treated and conditions he was held in. One reason I watched different channels on this case is to hear more takes on it. I am typically a sucker for a defense attorney (I believe they have a fascinating role in court) but I’ve felt RA’s attorneys were shady from day one. Thanks Lauren and Dr. John for all your hard work on this case! Since your last Patreon podcast I’ve been thinking about the questions Dr. John raised. One thing I’ve thought about is how common it is for the true crime community to be swept up in a story that reads like a mystery novel. A story with twists and turns where you can figure out the “bad guy” if you have enough clues and evidence. I think the Odinist defense offers that kind of plot line. Whereas, the prosecution’s theory isn’t nearly as interesting as a novel at least to me. Their argument is more rational, but it’s a story we have heard and been warned against as children through fairytale. However the defenses’s argument about the Odinists plotting and preforming secret rituals only they understand feels more like a novel with a true mastermind behind it. I think the prosecution’s story matched the evidence better, but I think the defense’s 3rd party defense was the more interesting story to latch to. I also think it’s easy to get sucked into the religious-like devotion/evangelism some creators have to RA’s innocence. He has seemed to become a Jesus figure of sorts for some. I’ve heard creators talk about how he was just trying to do the right thing by telling LE about being there and this is what LE did to him. I do wonder if not having as many common cultural myths is creating a void that conspiracies like this fills. Stay safe Lauren! I hope you’re able to make it home soon!

Reasonable minds can differ. As an attorney, I can tell you there are a lot of issues with how the judge handled this case and the conditions imposed on a pretrial detainee. I think the lawyers are less focused on his innocence and more convinced that there is unquestionably reasonable doubt and they should have won on that ground. If the lawyers are actually convinced that he's factually innocent that would be interesting to me as an attorney and it would be interesting to hear about the psychology of that (if it's more than confirmation bias). I know some early filings regarding odinism made it look like they believed in the unbelievable, but 1) their understanding of the case changes with time/discovery, and 2) lawyers use whatever they can -- within the rules -- to create reasonable doubt. Anything less wouldn't be the zealous advocacy they are required to apply to the case. What is Dr. John's opinion on defense attorneys buying their own arguments versus knowing they are just making an argument?

I think especially in the case of Ted Bundy’s mother, that poor woman came from a difficult family situation w/ the coercive control from her father, it was many times suggested that he was a product of incest even (I don’t think so). She was a nice lady, people in Tacoma, WA who knew her all say that she and her husband who adopted Ted and raised him with their subsequent children, tried their best with him. He clearly just wanted more and he self-sabotaged his education, career opportunities by being a thief and later, a killer of young women whom he viewed as being like a woman who rejected him in college at UW. I was always struck by his alibi. When it was being reported as simply a picture of a person of interest and there was speculation it was from a trail cam, he stated he was there, at that time, dressed like the guy in the picture. I believe him, that he mentioned witnesses who mentioned him just reinforced my belief. His confessions just reinforced my belief. Side note, I am curious how he remembered the 4 girls on the trail as 3 girls and noted that one was clearly older and possibly babysitting. It’s like his attention was on the younger girls, to the degree he missed the other older girl. Why would that be how he observed them instead of just a group of girls? Who pays that level of attention when on a casual walk?

There’s a bunch of criminal defense attorneys who are working w/ YouTubers. This is how the misinformation and conspiracy theories were spread. I originally did believe he might be innocent but I don’t believe that at all since the trial really got going. The supporters of these YouTubers are the ones who are not open to receiving new information and processing that information rationally. It’s propaganda.
