Backstory ( warning long read ahead :)
On the desolate rocky islands of the Skhellysian archipelago, the human tribes of Scragots once once lived. These were tribes that hunted both the fish — and the passing ships. T
he pirate tribes never changed their lifestyle and kept true to their traditions for centuries. It was impossible to destroy them or punish them, as there are hundreds of islands to search, and the pirates had many fast ships. Several powerful empires tried to get even with the Scragots, but the pirates always brought whole villages onboard and hid deep within the archipelago.
Perhaps these people would have continued to live and enrich themselves the same ways, had the islands of the archipelago not been engulfed by a powerful cataclysm of unprecedented proportions.
Scientists are still arguing about the causes and nature of the cataclysm, and many of them predict that the same cataclysms may soon enough engulf countries or even continents.
The main theory claims it was the withering of the Great Tree that, in some places, has led to a catastrophic imbalance of the elemental forces. And so these forces upturned, changing their essence to the exact opposite.
And so, after a powerful volcanic eruption, the rocks reared up and days later rose into the clouds, and the sea churned and bubbled and flew up to eventually form watery rings around the levitating rocks.
At the same time from the bottom of the ocean a rock rose, taking its place in the middle of the new floating archipelago; a rock that was certainly of an unnatural source and an intelligent creator, because with a closer inspection, the nature of the rock was obvious. It was a supermassive mausoleum, the inscriptions and bas-reliefs of which were covered with, instead of shells, numerous bones of mysterious anthropomorphic creatures.
When the last of the fires and ashes from the volcanoes settled and the crying of the Scragot women subsided, a soundless voice began to echo in the survivors’ heads. In time, many will accept it and come to understand what it orders.
The people who settled on the mausoleum or the nearby levitating rocks began to transform both mentally and physically. Soon enough they degraded to cannibalism and bloody rituals. The tainted Scragots started adding scraped crumbs from the mausoleum to the armor they made, after which, such armor could suck the souls out of the victims and merge with the flesh and mind of the Skhragoth warrior.
The most zealous followers of the Call started growing at first rudimentary and later full-fledged wings, allowing such Skhragoths to swoop down on the victim like raptors.
These warriors quickly created their own elite caste that began to command the rest of their tribesmen. It was from the Skhragoth raptors that the most skilled warrior was chosen to receive the title of the overlord and the numerous gifts the Call offered.
The glory and fear that the Skhragoth tribes had previously bathed in, faded in comparison with their new inhumane deeds. Merchant or military, the Skhragoth ships now returned to port with their masts decorated with guts, severed heads and fresh corpses and their hulls repainted red with blood.
The Skhragoths were not the only ones to respond to the Call. The almadons, these huge ominous winged creatures that can hunt both in the air and in the water, had also heard the voice of the mausoleum. The Almadons entered into an unspoken alliance with the tainted Skhragoths, and the latter began to use the Almadons either as a means of transport for their infantry, or as a means for boarding and ramming ships.
After the Skhragoths saddled the Almadons, the radius of their raids increased many times. From time to time, they would even reach and ravage the villages on the western shores of the continent.
Many people believe and say that Skhragoths will bring destruction to civilizations, but few people know that the Call that had corrupted the Skhragoths is also their leash, for it is unbearable for them to be too long away from the Call. Yet no one knows for how long this leash will keep its power and whether it may tear in the nearby future.
Cheers,
Alexei
