It's not just about making his Dad proud, but also about making himself feel safe with his Dad not being there. If he couldn't be, then subconsciously he tried to shape himself into his Dad to get that feeling of safety. Unfortunately, that was an unrealistic standard to meet, which lead him in the direction of perfectionism.
