As you can see in the sketch, I originally had a more flat perspective, but I thought it looked kind of boring and something with more perspective would be more dramatic and fit the scene better. I wanted there to be tension! So, perspective lesson:
Flat composition = comedy
Composition with depth = drama
Why is this a case? It probably relates to old cartoons! Flat compositions are often used in cartoons because the backgrounds are easier to make, cycle, and recycle. Remember those running scenes in Chuck Jones cartoons where a background is repeated over and over? There you go! Subconsciously we learned from watching those cartoons as a kid that images with flat compositions are likely to be funny, but the opposite is likely to be dramatic. So I take advantage of this to help set the mood!
