I wanted to give a feeling of Nes's Mom wanting to comfort him, while Nes showed resentment. I did a few things to accomplish this without having the characters outright say how they feel.
1. I pushed Mom's dialogue bubbles towards Nes, and I kept Nes's dialogue bubble close to himself.
2. I had Nes cross his arms in front of himself, forming a physical barrier. Meanwhile, Nes's Mom is reaching out to him while gesturing.
3. Nes's Mom never stops looking at her son, but Nes never makes eye contact.
Some of you also may notice the seats changed color - I had to change them from red to blue because in this panel, the red was too overwhelming and the characters weren't standing out very well. While blue is less like a diner aesthetic, it fits the mood better and helps the characters pop, so in this case I sacrificed "realism" in favor of readability. :)
