Love this! Question re the Martian winter - is it actually caused by increased distance to sun as you say? Didn't think that orbital eccentricity was much higher than earth's.

2025-04-15 22:34:17 +0000 UTCHi, thanks for the comment. On the first note both the tilt and orbit play a part in the martian winter and saying they happen in tandem isn’t wrong, which is what we were going for. However, on the second point you're bang on. We're wrong about where in the orbit Perseverance was, as you said correctly, it should be at it's closest. Good spot and thanks for flagging!

2025-04-07 16:15:41 +0000 UTCYou seem to imply - twice - that the reason for the season change is the distance from the Sun. ("As Mars gets farther away from the Sun, the temperature keeps dropping"). This is, of course, not true. While the Mars' orbit is much more elliptical than the Earth's, most of the season changes are still due to the axial tilt, like on Earth. Different distance (and speed of passing) explain the difference between the northern and southern seasons (southern are harsher). Furthermore, as far as I remember, Perseverance is on the northern hemisphere, which means Mars should be getting closer to the Sun as it goes into winter.
