The reason is so you can control how much oxygen goes in, they make sure there's not enough to prevent the explosion propagating back up the tube. Unsure in terms of efficiency as it's something that needs to be done for it to work at all - Henry from Team Ve

Question: Why do they have to put in pure O2? Is "air" not good enough? Obviously he knows much more than I every will, but I am interested in the trade off of carrying the O2 vs. using air - what is the loss of efficiency vs. lighter weight?
