About thirty years ago, I saw a long stretch on “ribbon rail”, up in Canada. The first thing that caught my eye was the graceful “S” shapes of the expansion areas (no bolted joints.) I imagine that the rails would shorten a bit in the Wintertime. It would be interesting to see 5 minutes or so on Ribbon Rail. This was an excellent show and your “sweat equity” was a testament to the people who work in this field.

2025-01-03 02:07:32 +0000 UTCI must admit, the last time I rode Amtrak from San Francisco to Seattle, I seem to recall the familiar “clickity-clack” sound most of the way. I’m not sure what’s going on in the US vis-a-vie the railroad. They’ve apparently in bad condition, and may not use the thermite welding process at all. Just not sure.
