Why Don’t Railroads Need Expansion Joints? - our latest video, ad-free!

Comments

About thirty years ago, I saw a long stretch on “ribbon rail”, up in Canada. The first thing that caught my eye was the graceful “S” shapes of the expansion areas (no bolted joints.) I imagine that the rails would shorten a bit in the Wintertime. It would be interesting to see 5 minutes or so on Ribbon Rail. This was an excellent show and your “sweat equity” was a testament to the people who work in this field.

I must admit, the last time I rode Amtrak from San Francisco to Seattle, I seem to recall the familiar “clickity-clack” sound most of the way. I’m not sure what’s going on in the US vis-a-vie the railroad. They’ve apparently in bad condition, and may not use the thermite welding process at all. Just not sure.

It is always a good day when I see the email from you announcing a new video!
