First up, sorry for going quiet for the last several months. I'm fine - I hope you are all keeping safe and healthy as well. Thank you to everyone who has messaged or emailed me to see if I'm ok. My kids came out of daycare fairly early in March and we have been with them 24/7 since. See Fig.1, my kids pretending to be ghosts (sometimes they are scary, sometimes friendly, they just want hugs).
Several important announcements:
1. There will be a new video coming out this Friday. It was filmed before the lockdown but it had a sponsor who requested I hold off on releasing the video until now. This will be an unpaid post.
2. My wife and I will be welcoming baby number 3 in July π± I had originally planned on taking a 3-6 month paternity leave after the birth but now due to the pandemic I've already had some "time off". I will likely still take a break but I'm not sure for how long.
3. I set up this Patreon account on a 'per video' basis rather than 'per month' because I didn't want patrons to pay when I'm not making stuff. I also didn't want patrons to support sponsored content because that feels like double dipping. So in 2020 there has not been a paid post.
4. If you want to support Veritasium anyway, one way is to purchase Snatoms, the magnetic molecular modeling kit I kickstarted almost 5 years ago. I made an all-new version of the full-sized kit with small holes at the location of the magnets (I call it Snatoms X). Since the magnets can now touch (instead of being separated by 1mm of plastic) the magnetic force is much stronger and bigger molecules hold together better. I have a lot of inventory in the US you can order here or click here for international orders. Please feel no obligation to support in this way, Veritasium is doing fine.
Thank you so much for your ongoing support and your patience with me. As a content creator one of the challenges I feel acutely is a need not to add to the noise. This is why I have largely disconnected from social media and partly why I have not felt compelled to post during this time. I want to make a unique contribution to the world and in this moment it seems to me a lot of what needs to be said has been said.
I wish you all a safe, healthy and happy rest of 2020. It can only get better from here right?
All the best,
Derek
