Added 2019-09-20 05:41:17 +0000 UTCI have long been fascinated by the intermediate axis theorem and I've come across it a few times when I wasn't expecting it. Here I think we've animated the best intuitive explanation of the effect.

It's really striking how an additional few sentences at 8:40 on how the large masses constrict motion will clarify why the flip occurs. This half-turn has to occur along the 1st/smallest axis (within the rotating frame), since the inertia of the large masses inhibit new rotations along the third/largest axis.
