You turned, but the flash of movement in the corner of your eye was gone. It was getting more frequent. A few days ago, it had just been a half-imagined thing. Motion that you were barely aware of. Now? Now you knew it was there. You were sure of it.
But no one else knew what you were talking about. They laughed it off, saying that your mind was playing tricks on you. And you would settle for a moment. Until you saw it again. You didn’t know what it was. Sometimes it looked almost human. Other times, much different.
Maybe the stress of work had gotten to you. Maybe you had started seeing things – stress could do that to a person, right? You didn’t know. You got to bed that night exhausted from looking over your shoulder. You didn’t know what it was. But it felt off. Wrong.
You had closed your eyes, when you heard a soft step. You sat up, staring around at your moon-lit room. Nothing. You lay back down, breathing hard. You didn’t close your eyes. This time, you saw it. Coalescing out of the shadows, tendrils still anchoring them back, was a figure.
Their face, from what you could tell, was shadow. Two opalescent balls of fire were in the place of eyes, and a hole, a shadow within the shadow of them yawned, seeming to consume the light around it. Their whole body seemed to writhe, as light shimmered off them.
They knelt down next to you. You fought with your body not to react. Not to look at them, not to scream. The figure smiled. You felt something, throbbing in your brain. Each pulse of pressure left them looking less otherworldly. More human.
Their facial features became more defined. Their skin stopped writhing. They smiled, and finally, they moved into your vision. The rest of your room was bathed in darkness as their shadow covered the window. That pulsing in your mind was receding. Less of a pressure.
More of a gentle background hum. Your lover lay down on the bed, and your arms embraced them. You remembered. They were so cold. You loved them. You cherished them. You adored them. You didn’t need control. In them, you found freedom. Freedom to be theirs, as they fed on you.
