Ticking

In the middle of a boring workday, you find your mind wandering.

* * *

A soft ticking came to your attention. The sound permeated your mind for a second, but you wrenched your focus back to your work. This spreadsheet wasn’t going to populate itself. You tried, you filled in a couple more rows. Then came the ticking again. Louder this time.

You looked around. The ticking had gone. There was no clock in the room with you. You sighed. In your head, you heard the voice of your hypnotist. “Tick-tock, mind drop.” It was so clear, down to the sing-song way they said it. You felt your mind grow fuzzy, cloudy.

And then you were staring at your spreadsheet. It was times like this that you were drawn back to your hypnotist’s sessions. To those feelings of control, of pleasure. Of blissful submission. Your phone buzzed. It was a text from your hypnotist. It just read: “Thinking of me?”

You were puzzled. Then you saw the last message you had sent to them. It was your face, and you looked so blank, so mindless. It had been sent less than a minute ago. When – how? And then your hypnotist sent another message, and another, and you found yourself dropping again.
