The room was dark, save for a single point of light. The soft flame of a candle, which flickered in an unseen wind. It looked almost like it was beckoning you. Beckoning you forwards. Towards the table on which the candle was resting. It was so… Inviting.
You took a step closer. The darkness felt like it was pressing in on you, trying to smother you. The flame – the flame was safety, in this crushing dark. Another step. The air behind you felt thick, like it was trying to hold you back, to hold you still. But you would not be still.
Another step. The candle was so close now. It held your attention. You were deaf to the world, blind to anything but this single point of flickering, shining light. Had that humming always been there? The soft whispers that tugged at your mind? You couldn’t tell.
It didn’t seem to matter, either. You took the final step, to the table, and sat, almost automatically. You hadn’t noticed the chair before, but it seemed like the right thing to do. The candle flickered again. The whispering – was it louder? And the chair – the chair felt… Sticky.
You tried to pull your hand from the chair’s arm, but it wouldn’t move. In a panic, you tried to stand, but your feet were held down, and your body was trapped in the chair, which you could now feel was soft, and moving. The whispers were more pronounced now.
It was hard to focus. You – you – you had been panicking. Why? The chair was comfortable. The light was warm. The soft music that emanated from the darkness helped you to relax. You felt something attach to your ears, and the whispers grew louder, drowning out your thoughts.
Now, all that existed was the candle, and the whispers. And the candle was getting fainter. It’s light burning less brightly. You felt your thoughts being pushed out of you, replaced, by new thoughts. The candle went out. And slowly, around the room, glowing eyes stared at you.
