Spin the wheel and win a prize. That’s what the party’s host had said. So you took your chance, and they flung it round, as they called out: “Round and round and round it goes, where it stops, no one knows!” As the wheel continued to spin, you couldn’t take your eyes off of it.
The colours formed patterns that dragged your eyes to the centre. So hard to look away. And the other party guest who had leant in to whisper in your ear wasn’t making it any easier. Their words were making you feel so sleepy. So weak, and tired.
You could feel yourself leaning in to the other guest, just to stay upright. Even as their words continued to fill the space where your thoughts had just been. You still couldn’t look away from the wheel and its pretty colours, they made you feel so dazed.
And even when the other guest helped you down to your knees, you couldn’t look away, until, finally, they told you to close your eyes. You didn’t need to know where it stopped. You knew what your prize was, it was the sweetest prize of all. Submission.
