We've finally finished the mammoth Chimera Ant arc. It was long, ambitious, and fascinating. On the whole, I think it's some of the best TV ever made. After dozens and dozens of episodes of tension, Togashi and Madhouse pull out all the emotional stops, closing as many narrative loops as possible before introducing the next season: the election of a new Hunter Association chairman.
This week we cover episodes 134-136, titled The Word x Is x You, This Person x And x This Moment, and Homecoming x And x True Name. Next episode we'll be covering episodes 137-139, titled Debate x Among x Zodiaks, Request x and x Wish, and Alluka x and x Something.

In particular, I rewatched the opening/endings for the arc and I'm so thrilled to see what catches Jack's eye for these last ones. Also, man, even just hearing bits of episode 135 had me falling apart.

2025-05-13 10:01:13 +0000 UTCRe: the phrase Kogumi uses to say she'll stay with the King and whether or not that was actually used in answering marriage proposals: I searched using the phrase in Japanese and while the whole phrase just points back to HxH, the first part (futsu-tsuka-mono-desu-ga / "i'm an incompetent person but...") can be used when meeting your fiance's parents after you got engaged. (In addition to other scenes where you'd typically use phrases to denote your lower social standing compared to your conversation partner) The second part (otomo-sasete-kudasai / "Please allow me to accompany") returned an interesting result. A 1961 short story by Yukio Mishima called "Yuukoku" ("Patriotism") "centers around the experiences of Lieutenant Shinji Takeyama and his young wife, Reiko, and their ritualistic suicide following the February 26 Incident, a mutiny by members of the Imperial Japanese Army in 1936." (—Wikipedia). So some similar thematic elements as far as following a loved one into death is concerned! Thanks for prompting a fun internet search. Love the show

2025-05-09 09:24:51 +0000 UTCI feel like the sheer length of the Chimera Ant arc creates a somewhat warped scale about how long stories are. 12 episodes is about how much the average anime gets right now. Maybe it gets 24, maybe it gets multiple seasons, but lots of shows have a grand total of 12 or 13 episodes to tell their whole story. And they do it! There's still a LOT of story left to tell in this show. So I really would not feel like anything is settled in for the rest of the show at this point.
