I think the most obvious example is Sylvi at 1:18:28 but it seems to happen to Jack and Keith too. Again, it’s not a big enough deal that it makes anyone unintelligible, but thought I’d raise awareness to it! Love the show as always!

2025-02-27 05:02:26 +0000 UTCAbout that translation difference in the Killua line about Gon. The subtitles that say "Gon might go down with Pitou" or something is just flat out wrong. Like, entirelly, that is just a bad translation. That is the Crunchroll version, I believe, which is usually more trustable as it is direct translation instead of the Close Captions from the dub, like the Netflix version (dub scripts have more limits in how they can word things, so they tend to be slightly less accurate to the original when compared to direct subs), but in this case it is just a massive fuck up. It is not an issue of ambiguity, when listening (or reading) the original there is very little reason to think Killua was talking about Pitou, it was always about him and Gon. The "go down in flames with him" is more accurate but still lacks a bit of the cultural context that is, admitely, very hard to translate. The word Killua uses, shinjū, is often translated as "double suicide" or "lover's suicide". It is a common tragic romance trope in Japanese literature, of two lovers dying together to stay together in the afterlife. The word can be used in other contexts (like when a family die together). It is always about love but not necessarily romantic love (though that is the classic trope). Still it is easy to see how this is an important line for shippers. PS: That connotation of shinjū is just another reason for why Killua is very definitively not talk about Gon and Pitou dying together.
