THE DADDY-FICATION OF SANTA

He has man names through out the world. Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, St Nicholas and Papa Noel to name a few. Popularized in Western culture around the later 18th, early 19th century, Santa Claus is a figure with somewhat debatable origins. Like many cultural figures he is sourced from mythology and history, taking on attributes and traits as time passes and peoples perceptions are altered.

Many relate him as far back as Odin, the popular god of the early Scandinavian people. Responsible for many supernatural events including riding an eight legged stallion through the night sky. St. Nicholas was a Catholic saint to who was noted as a giver of gifts to the poor in Greece during a time of conquest and uncertainty and remained a central figure even after his death. After the Protestant reformation, the people of England no longer kept the St. Nicholas holiday. Father Christmas took over and was a celebrated figure during the 16th century and was seen as a bringing of wine, food and revelry. This figure remained so popular that it even lasted into the Victorian age, from where many of our 'modern' Christmas celebrations originate.
