Citizenship within the nation of Verdant is not a right but a privilege which must be earned to order to be appreciated. It offers many benefits such as marriage, the ability to own property, land, a business and the ability to pass things on to your children. By Verdant law, anyone who passes the trials has the right to these things, regardless as to where they were born or what their station in life was before. While the more modern option allows for ten years in military service to prove oneself the Trials are still a respected and glorified means of obtaining Citizenship and perhaps a better life for one's future. How they first began is not enticingly unknown, though it was centuries ago that the tradition began. This story is told to every young woman in the nation before she joins with a troop of other girls to endure a year in the Red Wastes.
