Thy Judgement Cometh

Dear Insane Children,

Work on writing and illustrating the narrative outline for Alice: Asylum continues - with the team fully engaged on a large number of art tasks we're pulling from the game story. The idea is to present a Design Bible - something like an illustrated novel - that you can read through from start to finish to get a full understanding of the game in its final form.

There's a section where Alice first enters The Queen's Domain and must pass through Judgement (a physical "courthouse" building filled with obstacles and dangers). The story for that part of the game reads:

ANGER/JUDGEMENT REALM - THE COURTHOUSE

Arriving at The Courthouse steps Alice is warned by The Knave that this place is A Cruel Machine that answers to no one - not even The Queen. Once Alice enters the only way out is through The Trials and Judgement. If Alice is found Innocent, she will be allowed to continue on her journey to The Queen. If she’s found guilty, she’ll be sentenced to Croak for eternity. The Knave again implores Alice to return to The Circus.

[NOTE: Alice won’t be convinced to turn around so The Knave gifts her a New Weapon - American Requested - Card Association / Valued Queen’s Possession / Grenade Launcher High Damage / Artillery Weapon]

We PLAY as Alice enters the halls of The Courthouse and begins to make her way through The Trials towards Judgement. What follows is a sequence of Challenge Spaces (Trials) that contain Puzzles, Combat Arenas, and Navigation Challenges. These lead to a Kafkaesque Main Hall, a surreal embodiment of bureaucracy and brutal judgment where the combat and navigation puzzles continue while Alice’s sins and crimes are read aloud by a stadium full of judges.

Alice successfully completes The Trials and arrives at Judgment only to be told that, despite passing her trials, she’s been found guilty and will be sentenced to Croak for eternity. Alice is FURIOUS. So furious that she bursts into flames as she screams her rage at the mechanical face of judgment. But all her fury is in vain as the floor opens beneath Alice’s feet and she’s dropped screaming into the darkness.

From there, Alice finds herself engaged in a life or death game of Croquet... but more on that later.

As terrifying and challenging as this section of the game might be... Adam's illustrations make me want to jump in and explore RIGHT NOW.

Let us know in the comments below what you think of Judgement. And put your Crowd Design Hat on... I'm looking for your thoughts on challenges or other elements that would fit into this area! Share them in the comments below. Keep in mind that the theme of this area is the link between PTSD-Anger-Judgement

The idea is that when we suffer a trauma we experience a lot of anger - at ourselves and at others. That anger usually contains a lot of negative projection or introspection - judgment and blaming of ourselves and others for the calamity that's befallen us. As an example, it would not be out of place to hear whispers (sometimes shouts) of "It's Your Fault!" blaming Alice as she moves through this space.

What other kinds of dialog, challenges, and ideas might support the concept of Anger/Judgement here? Let me know in the comments below!

Font Lord wants to me let you know that due to some delays at the Backerkit office, the surveys for this month's Art Prints and Chaos Necklaces have not yet been sent out. He expects them to go out within the next week though. Your patience is appreciated!

Calendar Feedback?

I'm seeing a number of people posting online that they've received their calendars. And everyone seems to be happy with the quality of the calendar - as we should expect from our Crowd Design efforts! But also lots of people commenting on the sturdy box these were shipped in.

Did you get your calendar yet? Happy with it and the shipping container?

Thy Judgement Cometh

I know I'm extremely late to the show here (been behind on emails) and this probably wont be seen BUT as for the whispers/shouting I love the idea. What would make it great would be to have some be really soft and others loud and right in your face. Like a scream in the distance sometimes. And something that would be amazing would be if it was directional sound (think Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice) where if one was playing with headphones it would sound like a person was whispering right in their ear.

ugh! i cannot wait, the illustrations look so awesome, and it's really sounding good story wise ^^

Yup the trials of judgement and the courthouse looks like a dark turn. I think it’s an excellent idea. Having the judge as Alice herself sounds very relatable for PTSD. What if after passing the trials and she’s still sentenced her anger gives her a new magic ability? Something only her rage can unleash at certain times in the game. A fire ability she has to use to win the croquet death game in order to move on. Good stuff!

First: I received the necklace and the calendar. Packaging is impressive and the calendar looks amazing. Love the detail!

To elucidate somewhat: what does Alice do to Dormie and the March Hare in this part that makes them want to scald her with hot tea and pound her with fists in AMR? There could be run offs/trials between her and the characters we encounter later in which Alice maybe has to cheat or trick them in some way to come out on top. A tea making competition maybe, in which a vital ingredient can only be found at the core of Alice's anger, so that would immediately make foes of Hatter, Dormie and March Hare. What would be at the core of Alice's anger? Fire, I suppose, with which to heat the water

Enmity, that's the word I was looking for. Hatred is too harsh

I love the concept of the Judgement and the Courthouse!

This looks fantastic! Love the dark and terrifying atmosphere, that is what I am expecting to see in the game

The judgement level artwork feels heavy. It's perfect!

Stephanie Groth

Yes! Absolutely, call backs, or in this case, setting up future enmity i with the duchess, hatter etc is an awesome idea!

I initially thought that this would be a good opportunity to bring in some favourite characters, White Rabbit, Hatter, even the Duchess, in scenes that were reminiscent of earlier battles but in some way distorted, so that they couldn't be played in exactly the same way, but then I remembered that this is a prequel, which would be a bit of a paradox. However, this could therefore be the initial setting for her later battles with those same characters, and would be a good place to establish them as objects of anger and hatred, rather than as allies.

,ikr! As soon as I read about that I knew it was perfect!

Oooh, that’s a great idea!!! There’s so many ways cards can be used. American mentioned heavy artillery/grenade launcher... I imagine an explosion and a cloud of shrapnel, only it’s cards instead of shrapnel. Exploding cards!

Karolina Belomestnova

I see those hands as pointing down. Down at you, down at whoever is going through the hall. I love it, too 🖤❤️🖤

Karolina Belomestnova

I love these ideas! I kinda disagree about Denial, though. You should be able to see secret passages if your vision is NOT clouded by denial. I mean, the passages are *there*, we just don’t see them. So Alice needs to look PAST or THROUGH denial. That’s what I think.

Karolina Belomestnova

Perhaps we could bring back the throwing cards? I loved that weapon in AMA! I think it would be the perfect weapon for the Realm of the Queen! Perhaps the cardshave special abilities! She could also use one of the card guards Staffs and launch them from the top of that! Then they could blow up! Idk anythingto get this weapon in the game againxD. "52 pick up is a staple of juvenile humor..but when the deck slices and dices....it is no laughing matter"-cheshire.

I love it all! Maybe she could stand trial and have all the weird characters in the jury and then have a judge. Maybe the judge can be another form of herself?

Sarah McKeegan

First of all, I was so excited that on my birthday, I received my chaos necklace!!! Thank you so much! Second of all, I’m replaying madness returns on my Xbox one as I hadn’t played it there before. I did playstation. I always find myself speaking the lines as I go. I always imagined myself doing the voice over for Alice as it’s not as often to have a British female lead. Posh Britain for the win, in the middle of cockney London!

My Calendar showed up in perfect condition. The shipping protections worked like a charm, and the Calendar itself turned out fantastic!

Love everything about this. Like literally everything. The article mentions projection, so obviously Alice is going to have to be very honest with herself, and that fits in perfectly with the rage of going through that painful self reflection only to be told it wasn't good enough. Since this is a realm of judgement, Alice showing she possesses sound (if anything in Wonderland can be called as such) judgement wouldn't be a bad challenge. I was always fond of the variations of "who was responsible for the maidens death" puzzles. It tells a lot about how the individual sees blame itself.

I love the red pointing hands. But should they be pointing forward as they appear to be, or AT Alice (in a judge-y way)? yes to the big head (the novels have so many references to being eaten!) and flame (going out like a candle) I also love the visual of the papers (lists of sins) Are there multiple all-watching red eyes? (if that's what I'm seeing). Not as many as the hands, but in certain scenes looking around to keep an eye on her? and yay for croquet!

Absolutely enthralled with this. I have quite a few ideas to contribute as someone who’s related (a little too heavily) to Alice for over a decade, also suffering from severe PTSD due to intense trauma. The narrative is as puzzlingly perfect as ever, the artwork gives me the same desire to jump into it and play NOW! The concept is just a truly phenomenal addition to this masterpiece-in-the-making and I LOVE where we’ve been left off (also very intrigued by this croquet game and adore the use of the reference). Most uncanny to the psychological storm in my eyes are the whisperings - “it’s all your fault!”, etc. I have a lot to suggest here solely because, as I said, it’s so uncanny. It’s so *real* to how this area of the mind feels and reacts to trauma. I feel like well placed things like that will really bring the player into Alice’s state of mind- almost becoming disorienting, if that makes sense. “Judgement” is such a brutal, raw piece of Alice’s journey so it’s at least my personal belief that we take our time here. Really tuning into standing in her shoes for maximum authenticity to the sheer mad brilliance of this whole thing. Sorry for the super long comment... but just had to share my initial reaction before doing some deep thinking and returning with my contributions. As always, honoured to be a part of this creative process. Dutifully, Patient No. 932 Certified Insane

I do hope you keep replay value in mind in this part. I don't want it to end up with a groan like some think about the puzzles in AMR (though I absolutely love them). I'm very excited for what the future holds, and I'm loving the shape of this so far!

I’m also getting to think about how each stage of grief could be represented by an item or an ability that Alice could have. This is just me spitballing but: 1. Denial Vision - could act similarly to Shrink Sense. Allows you to see invisible secret passages or platforms. I would suggest implementing a cool down so it doesn’t get abused “When your vision is clouded by denial, you may see what isn’t there.” 2. Rage Form - as described in my comment above 3. Depression as currency - Enemies defeated by Alice drop tears (like teeth in AMR) which can be used to purchase items, upgrades, etc 4. Bargaining ability - after acquiring this ability, enemies defeated while low on health yield more tears 5. Acceptance trophies - I was thinking that at the end of every stage Alice gains some artifact (maybe it could be the keys or some kind of representation of a family heirloom) that represents a stage clear

Those updates sounds amazing and I absolutely like that she's getting judged througout the trials since it makes the situation she's (but also the player) in even more tense and maybe even a bit frustrating? In a good way, of course. I wonder, if it would be an interesting idea that at some point Alice can't stand the judgement for a while and wishes that she would've died, instead of her family and is about to give up and that it would be a challenge to get her out of those thoughts to be able to go further?

I think that all of these updates sound great! It might be neat if Alice must take the stand during these trials and recount her understanding of the night of the fire. This could serve as an opportunity for Alice to express exactly what she can remember about it, and after each time she takes the stand to give her statement, she becomes visibly more angry and guilty. With each time this happens, she might begin to mutter to herself things like “I could’ve done more,” “why did I leave them,” “I didn’t kill them... I - I didn’t want to kill them,” etc. These would be things you could hear during normal gameplay throughout the trials.

I got my calendar and am amazed at the quality! I love it 🥰 best part is how you hang it because there is no hole through the pictures so I can save them after. Also the shipping was pretty fast and the box was super sturdy!

Alice won't encounter Fire Alice until she gets to the Queen's Dungeons (after Courthouse) but this "burst" could be a sort of foreshadowing. And, yeah, acquiring Rage/Fire power after the Fire Alice encounter sounds like a great idea!

American McGee

Happy to hear that!

American McGee

I hope Alice spontaneously bursting into flame isn’t just a visual gag. Something like is so out of left field for Alice that I would hope it foreshadows some kind of ability. So it gave me a thought. We know Alice is to fight Shadow Alice’s fire form in this stage, so what if after we defeat her we gain a “Rage Form” that activates much like Hysteria Mode that has Alice burst into flame and output double her usual damage?

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

My calendar arrived yesterday the first thing I noticed was how nicely it was packaged, I was very impressed with it. The foam was really sturdy, it did really well to prevent the calendar from bending at all.
