Critters Galore

Dear Insane Children,

We have LOTS of updates across all of our projects. That means we're going to have TONS to talk about during the Live Stream this week. Before you read any further, head over to Twitch and Subscribe to my Channel. You can do that here:

 https://www.twitch.tv/americanmcgee

We'll kick things off at the usual time - 10AM on Thursday (Hong Kong - people living in a communist-socialist country protesting for more capitalist democracy - Time) which is 7PM PDT (Seattle - people living in a  capitalist democracy protesting for more communist-socialism - Time). Anyway, just put down the Molotov cocktails and spray paint for a few hours while we discuss video games and plush toys!

Speaking of plush toys...

How are you going to explain this to your friends?

And. This? (Btw, I think we just came up with a name for this guy over on Twitter... "Wearwolf Pig" Ha!).

Again, the whole point of Plushie Dreadfuls is to have your friends say, "What the hell is wrong with your toy?" and then you know to get some new friends who don't question your weird-ass toys.

Then there's the stuff going on over in...

The Chess Realm

Where Omri and the team continue to explore the themes and colors we'll find in that part of Wonderland.

Of these color explorations Omri says:

Attaching 3 images. and everything else i got. red black and white, to show you guys the use of color in this realm. we can replicate areas again and again. remember that with the Escher geometry we can turn around a pole and see another room? this can also be used for it.
Black white red, doesn't mean grayscale or flat, it means just that the materials will be in those colors. so tall buildings, sky etc. stuff is defined for this realm, the general look is on lock.

And then... over in the world of...

Wizard of Oz

We continue to explore various ideas for the remaking of Dorothy. Omri sent along this variation on Dorothy and asked for feedback from the Insane Children.

I suggested that in today's world of hyper-political-correctness that we'd likely find ourselves burned to the ground by a bunch of people on Twitter for daring to create a black character without ourselves being black. At least that's the way I read the current mood... am I wrong?

Being so far away from the social-political maelstrom that seems to be consuming the US, I have no idea of how Twitter outrage translates into real-world negative consequences. So let me know in the comments below...

And then...

Alice 3D Model

We're seeing further updates from Roman on the Alice 3D model. He's got the beginnings of her dress taking shape. And he's sent me some phone-potato-footage of a video where this dress is textured, blowing in the wind, and looking pretty awesome. Hoping we will have an actual video file of that to review during this week's live stream.

Lastly...

I can hint mysteriously at the fact that even though many of the people we deal with on the business development side of things are on vacation these days, I am still getting "heartbeat" messages from a number of places - verifying that talks will resume and progress will be made once everyone gets back to work in September. So that's good stuff.

As I said, LOTS of stuff to talk about during the live stream this week. Some of it may even get me canceled. Yay! So, share your feedback and thoughts in the comments below. I'll beat Font Lord with a stick to ensure he prints out that stuff for reading during the stream. And we'll see you over on Twitch soon!

This Dorothy is very cool in someway, I like it!

Love the Dorothy update and can't wait to see more of the 3d Alice model.

YES! Omri is such an underrated genius, the attention to detail is always perfect. this Dorothy is someone i can see myself getting excited to see the world of. a great adventure partner.

Loooove that Dorothy design!

This is my favorite Dorothy so far!! I love the curly hair / bow silhouette.

I whipped up a couple pieces here as aesthetic ideas trying to go for a creepy old timey amusement park/circus/carnival feel: https://imgur.com/a/dhyO5wO

A pandapede neck pillow!!!!

I like this Dorothy....a lot! Wonderful idea!

I know this is random but it would be nice to be able to unlock a chess side game

I absolutely ADORE this POC approach with Dorothy!!

The danger here is that any choice you make will piss off some group (leftist or rightist) online who will be vitriolic in their feedback and it will churn into the endless “culture war” fights online. While a consultant might help inoculate against the potential criticisms of “some random white dude making a game about the black experience” there will be some for whom it will not be enough, and the other side will start up with their whining about race-bending or whatever else. While I am happy to see that the community here seems quite open, accepting, and understanding, this is a very small segment of people quite predisposed to like your stories, the internet at large may be far less accepting no matter what you say or do here. I don’t envy the decision ahead of you...but go with what feels right and weather the storm.

Hell yeah to POC Dorothy, +1 to sensitivity/researching/feedback for it and the story. I think it's nice to see proper representation. Especially given many big names and projects can really damage public viewpoint by just making things up for dramatic effect. (I'm pretty sour with how hollywood tends to portray different mental illnesses for example). To Chess animals: Please make them all merch of some kind. Some would make great plush (mantis, snake, orca, etc) and others would be really cool figures (rocking horse, flying zebra, mirror butterfly). And it'd be a bonus that they're not tied specifically to the Alice brand so they could have wider audience interest too. (That mirror butterfly would be awesome as a little statue or figure. I would buy it immediately.) Chess realm: I like the variations of this world. And in particular, its very nice in a sort of personal way to see the white/red realm. It gives off a very albino color scheme. Which I don't feel is represented very much in media. As someone with albinism it'd be pretty cool for that to be played into. Maybe as a character or creature that exists in a sort of state of oddness with itself. Animals with albinism are generally treated as rare, beautiful, and with no chance of survival in the wild. The people are not afforded as much of that mindset though. I am honestly not sure how those with albinism were treated in victorian london, but they would likely still stood apart from others and seen as strange. So perhaps this character would know its odd/unlike others, but has generally made peace with it enough to not let it consume them.

Okay seen black Dorothy topic and had to bring up when Kansas (where dorthy is taken from) is mentioned many of whom I hang with (juggalos and multiple variants of the underground and Twiztid' style of thinking) come to immediately think KC-MO and Strange Music (tech N9ne and so many more amazing artists) so seeing the black dorthy would be more keen Hopefully she had little extra twist as your variant of lady Alice, could've been high risk the choice you made but those briefly mentioned above are also major fans of this madness you have bought. If tweeter has a pull well remember there was a movie called 'The Wizz' with Michael and Janet Jackson (before Michael became the kind of weird none of us support but in all black cast so kind of been done and it would help promote a strong female figure so that's a plus and that's my opinion just I like it and I have a friend who actually should hopefully just send you a photo cuz that CG picture already almost looks like her and she does model up near Toledo if interested I'm horrible at keeping things rolling with all the work I do but felt nudge to say something. No bias and keep it wickid and don't take advice from Trump supporters inbreeding has defiled this nation so I'm sticking around for this madness to be released so you get my money over this crap. May art be our vision and chaos be our truest of friend

Weareolf! I love it!!! What if u could pick ur Dorothy? Maybe even have a male version? Like Dorothy looks into a mirror or a reflective surface at the beginning of the story and you can pick who is looking back? I don’t think that’s controversial. I think that’s giving people more options to play as someone they identify as. I mean you could have a rainbow colored Dorothy (I mean it’s oz right?) it doesn’t have to be logical right? So excited for the updates on Alice!

Oh man, we need all of the Chess critters as plushies or toys, they are all so beautiful!!

I love this Dorothy -- the outfit's still kinda meh and personally I'm not a fan of randomly augmenting her with tech for the hell of it, but this is really heartening. As for the "Politically correct" comment, I mean, as you can see in the comments, people love the idea of more diverse games. I can't think of many games where you play as a black woman and in the discord there's been discussion of wanting a Dorothy of color for a bit. The issue with white people making black characters is when they don't listen to actual black people when they have concerns or critiques...but since you guys are open to criticism (like what we're literally doing right now) then I don't think there's much to complain about. Omri, if you're here, I'd look into what people were wearing on farms during the dust bowl and great depression. Less ornamentation, more home-made, and I think you'll get a melancholic dark look that still invokes Kansas and Oz.

Winx Club is an easy one to find. Flora goes from POC in S1 to white in S7 and even more white in S8. Aisha is a little darker than this in S1 and you might think she has a little bit of a tan in S7. So my concern here is, this is the starting draft and she's gonna be damn near white in the final render.

I think she should be darker, personally. If you're gonna make her black, I think this would be perceived as white washing a black person. I've been seeing a lot of articles lately that talk about things like if you want to get a POC in a game, you have to start with that darkest skin color possible because they will lighten the skin color dramatically for the final render and I saw another one showing character development in children's shows of POC where they start dark and a few reworks later, they're barely a POC. I'll share the links if I can find them again.

Loving the look of Dorothy right now. Something about the hair, maybe? It's not often that you see curly hair in video games, or anything really. I like the color scheme and theme of the chess realm, too. Everything seems to be coming together nicely, maybe even some talks about funding? 😁

Black Lives referes to black people, POC stands for "People of color" wich includes black people but also asian people, latinx people, and everyone that isnt "white people". I dont think its too politically correct to correct black lives with POC lives, I think it mostly comes from people who do not seem to understand from where the BLMM its comming from.

I love black Dorothy with a burning passion florm her fluffy hair to her shiny metal legs. Also, have considered to option to make plush pochetes besides plushies? Wherewolf Pig would make a great purse!

Honestly, I feel like these days you'd get more hate for making Dorothy White, because that would show you aren't inclusive to other races. In reality, I think people who play your games don't really care that much about political correctness and just want to enjoy your games. I definitely like this version of Dorothy more than the steam punk one. Also the plushies look great. I suggest not giving Alice any breasts, since the majority of preteens, especially those that lack nutrition and food, will not have them. Keep up the good work :)

I think the black Dorothy is awesome. So much more interesting because it serves several purposes, besides it just looks great. on a side note, I'm spaniard so not really full aware of how it translates in other countries, but isn't it a bit absurd to say "black lives" and then be a bit too politically correct as to say "POC"?

Juan Romero

While I was liking more redhaired dorothy- that fluffy orange pack of hair looking quite dreamy, magic and unnatural while this version looks a bit more realistic- I still prefer that than the blonde haired dorothy that was definitely too generic in my opinion. (Please excuse my poor english)

I love the new Dorothy and agree with all the other commentators that she's my favourite so far and it's brilliant that she's a POC. Bringing in a consultant is a great way to ensure Dorothy is depicted accurately, is empowering and representative, as mentioned by others. Also, the consultant may provide new perspectives on the storyline which may invigorate the development of the game for the whole team. Chess realm, critters and 3D Alice are all amazing! I already receive funny comments from family on my White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat plushies... not sure how they will react to the pandapede or werewolf pig 😂

This is my favorite Dorothy so far! :) <3 Also, Alice is coming along very nicely and I am super excited about the Chess Realm design. This is amazing!

I agree totally, and I love the way she looks so far!

I think you all are doing great things! Keep up the awesomeness!

I have a mighty need for a pandapede, about a foot long but maybe without the extra head o_o

Aemi Daniels

I think this Dorothy is my favorite yet to be perfectly honest. ❤️ Seeing more strong female POC characters being represented? I'm all about that life. However I'm as white as they come, so obviously my opinion doesn't mean much in this arena. I, too, would love hear others chime in though.

I need a werewolf-pig! also, I LOVE Dorothy as a POC. If you have concerns about aspects of character depiction, you can always get a sensitivity editor - some authors do that too - someone who is the same as the character to "read" them and provide feedback on that aspect alone (I love LL McKinney's A Blade So Black with a black "Alice"). Plus, the gaming industry could use a little more Black Girl Magic

Okay those explorations of the chess realm are AMAZING!! literally Eye catching and magical! Definitely going to be my favorite area thus far! I was sad when we didn't get to explore more of looking glass land in AMR since its my favorite in AMA but I'm glad we get to this time! The 3D model looks perfect! I can't wait to see the final textured version! Now as for Dorothy I am in love with this exploration! A POC representation of an iconic character like Dorothy is not only important but its a powerful statement. I think alot of cosplayers and fan who see this will be happy to know that we are exploring this! Seeing a bad ass Black Dorothy fighting in Oz is such an amazing concept! Having a black female lead in a video game i think needs to be done and explored more:)I hope she stays this way because I know she is going to be loved just as much as we love Alice💘

I have now put the Wearwolf Pig on my list of future tattoos😄

I think making Dorothy a POC could be a good move, but I agree with the coment I saw on here that having a POC consultant on the project in some way would Probabbly help.

Dorothy looks badass. I'm in favor of more POC protagonists especially in games. Having a black female lead could also help the storyline if you tackle themes about identity and discrimination. Also, the Peacock Mantis & and Smokey Skunk are my absolute fave. Would 100% get them as tattoos and/or plushies

On the topic of using a POC character, it is generally seen as a good thing and encouraged to increase representation. However if you do it would benefit you to consult and actual POC.

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

Using mirrors could present cool puzzle solving opportunities. As an example of one: you are needing to go through a door in the Pale Realm but the button to open it is busted. A mirror faces the door and shows you the same door in the Red Realm/Chaos Realm where the door is impassable but the button functions. You go through the mirror and fight a horde of enemies before pressing the button which opens the door in the Pale Realm.

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

Wearwolf pig! Great name 😂

someone is going to want to burn you to the ground for anything you do. that’s them. not you

I had suggested a couple times that the Chess realm could be split into two mirrored versions, much like how it is presented in AMA. Given that the Chess area of Wonderland comes from Through the Looking Glass, you could utilize mirrors in this realm. One version being ruled by the white pieces, the black and white Pale Realm, and the other ruled by the red pieces and the Red Queen where the Chaos has taken over, the red and white version.

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

The chess realm has still captured my heart, it’s so beautiful ❤️ and I think this version of Dorothy is my favorite!! She’s so cute :) and the pandapede is still adorable
