Mysterious Makeup & Livestreams
Added 2019-09-27 16:00:00 +0000 UTC
Dear Insane Children,
We had an excellent Livestream over on YouTube yesterday in which we reviewed a TON of artwork, gave away a bunch of Cheshire Kittens, and covered a lot of other topics - Asylum story, Bumby as a shopkeeper, and more!
Hit THIS LINK to check it out.

One of the topics we've discussed at length in recent online sessions is the role we'll have Bumby play in Asylum. It's been suggested (and explored visually) that he's a shopkeeper in the central train station - a toy shop where Alice goes to purchase and upgrade her weapons.
More than a few issues are brought up by this idea - not the least of which is people's uncomfortable feeling at the idea of confronting (multiple times throughout the game) the primary antagonist from AMR.
The rationale I've provided for why his placement in Asylum works is that Alice (at 13 years of age) doesn't yet realize who or what he is. Therefore he can be paraded around in front of her...

But Omri's come up with an interesting suggestion which I like. Present Bumby as a shadowy "spider" type character who we never really see beyond his glasses. He's lurking in the shadows of the shop and interacts with things via long insect-like legs.
This can represent Alice's fuzzy awareness of him as an adult in her previous life but doesn't force us to directly confront him as the character we knew from AMR.
I dunno... could work. What do you think?
Crowd Design - Shadow Alice
We also had a very good Crowd Design session over on Discord this week. If you missed it then hit THIS LINK to check it out on YouTube.
We discussed Shadow Alice and the general nature of the story we're trying to tell in Asylum. Also discussed with the process by which we'll attempt to arrive at a compelling narrative.

Mysterious Makeup
During that yesterday's Livestream I also made mention of Mysterious Makeup - and asked whether or not our Insane Children felt it would be OK to share updates on this project here on Patreon. Everyone said "yes" and I don't think I saw a single "no" so...
Tomorrow I'll host a Livestream with my wife Yan where she can discuss the progress being made on her Mysterious Makeup project.
Join us via THIS LINK. It's at 7PM PST on September 27th.

One topic we'll discuss is the naming of the colors contained in these two palettes. If you'd like to suggest a name (or names) then feel free to do so in the comments below.
We'll review your comments and suggestions during the stream tomorrow.
Expect additional updates from Yan on the progress she's making with box design, brush design, color selection, and other elements related to these two Makeup Box Sets.
She would love to hear feedback and engage with everyone live during the stream tomorrow so please join us!
More On The Way!
Lots going on behind the scenes and I need to find time to post more of the recent artwork our team's cranking out. Expect that over the weekend!

Maybe im alone with it, but curious, have you thought about making vinyl figures for some of the creepy doll concepts?

I thrive off watching makeup channels on Youtube. Make sure the formulas are on point, or the palette will get roasted! Don't go cheap! people will pay a lot for a good palette!

The only problem I have with Bumby being too visible is that it could cause problems with the games’ continuity. If he’d been clearly seen on numerous occasions by Alice during her time in the Asylum, (and even if these encounters seemed to have been erased from her memory) mightn’t she be expected to have an uncomfortable feeling of familiarity with him in AMR, long before she pieces her memories together and realises the full truth? So I think it’s best to keep him as a shadowy presence in the shop, with maybe just his glasses clearly seen, and Alice feeling uneasy in his presence without quite knowing why ...

And when it comes to the makeup, I don't mind that it's posted onpatreon, I don't see why people don't like that. I really like the brush designs from the stream. And I alsop think it would be a good idea to make posts patreon exclusive

I really like the look of the dollshop, but I don't see why the rabbit and Ches' heads are on the wall. But I like Alice's head saying "Welcome" when she enters ha ha!

I unfortunately was not able to make it to the livestream, but here's my opinion after watching it on youtube: I think Bumby's involvment with the game is awesome, and it would be fun if he isn't intentionaly creepy. I think he can like sometimes stare at Alice for too long or once in a while say a little wierd things. I think if we make it too obvious that he is creepy, that the new players that comes to your game franchise through Alice Asylum won't understand. But if you make Bumby not scary just a little wierd maybe in Asylum, that can be a creepy hint to us long time fans but not scare any new players to the franchise.

Making him a spider or other shadow-y figure would make him too obviously evil; the more harmless and friendly he appears the greater the psychological horror of the scenario. His presentation should be subtle to the point where a first time series player might miss it entirely, but for those in the know there will be red flags everywhere.

My comment got auto-deleted twice already, so hopefully at least this part goes through and I can share the rest in a design session perhaps…
That people are uncomfortable with facing Bumby in “Asylum” as some sort of neutral-to-helpful character seems all the more reason to make sure he stays. There is a level of psychological horror to be mined there in the contrast between Alice’s ignorance and the player’s disgust, not to mention that sometimes the people we trust or those that appear to be helping us are in fact supremely poisonous.

Shadow Alice looks awesome but it would be cool if you could do a char affect on the tips of her hair so it looks like her hair is just about to ignite. The upgrade Toy Store is going to feel great. I'm going to be excited every time I see one cause it's upgrade time.

I think having Bumby in his full adult glory is fine and dandy. Because even if he's in a shadowy form we know. The dolls give it away. Just have him there.

I do like the idea of having Bumby being there but not seen clearly. Being a shop keeper doesn't really make sense though. Maybe just a cameo?

Beautiful doll shop!!!!!

Is there somewhere else that we should be following to get updates on the Mysterious Makeup? I am super excited about it and do not want to miss the launch! Much thanks!

With the Bumby thing I'd like to see the lamb from the book as usual, maybe make it Bumby and creepy, also when should I expect to get my tracking number, just making sure its not past due or anything I know things are busy but I gotta know the due date of things

I love the idea of Bumby as the shopkeeper, and keeping him sort of hidden just fits perfectly. Not a fan of the spider legs, though. From what we do see of him, I think he should appear like he does in the Dollmakers Domaine (not as he's seen in the final battle). There could be dollparts hanging around the shop, as reference to him and his role in AMR. A more sinister version than this (it's just a picture, of some Bumby concept art from AMR, I'm guessing).

I LOVE the makeup concept!! I would suggest naming #3 in the Classic palette “Tea Time” and #5 in Harvest “Off With Her Head.”

I think having a shadowy version of Bumby would work well, but not the spider limbs. Alice wouldn't see him as a bad guy, so why would he be depicted as a bad guy in Wonderland? I think we're getting closer to figuring it out, but we're not quite there yet.

I really like the Shdowy Spider Bumby idea. It feels like a good comprimise for those of us uncomfortable with him playing a neutral/good guy-ish role. At least, it does to me.

Comment:
I am a bit torn on the spider Bumby, I like the idea of him being a bit hidden but just I think he should actually be more saccharine and false (like being on It's a Small World). He was one giving gifts and such, having him be a dark figure right away tips the hand of who he is. I do think having him lose this mask as the game goes on would work.
We have a lot of different characters that have two sides to them, why not add him along for the ride?
