Out of The Circus - Into the Fire
Added 2019-08-13 02:09:37 +0000 UTC
Dear Insane Children,
The team are putting finishing touches on a couple of elements related to Denial and The Circus Realm. Over the past couple of weeks they've sketched out details for the characters we'll encounter and locations we'll visit. We also have a rough outline of the major story beats - but will come back to complete that sketch later.
The image above is the final version of Omri's "Madame Priscilla" poster from the Circus Realm.
This turned out great - and if it's anything like the "Surprise Guest" poster - it'll be amazing when printed. Of all the prints we've done... "Surprise Guest" jumped swiftly into my Top-3. There's a magic quality about it when printed as an actual poster. For those of you receiving these as art prints... you'll soon see what I mean.

Plushy Battle!
Meanwhile... in the dark depths of the Art Caves... Jen and Omri are sketch-battling over ideas for a third-and-final Asylum Plush. One suggestion (championed by Jen) is that we produce an "Asylum Alice" plush. Omri says that's "depressing" and would prefer to see a Denial Dress Alice Plush.

What do YOU think? If we add another Plush to the line... would you prefer Inmate Alice - wearing a straight jacket and with head shaved? Or a Denial Dress Alice... cute and blissfully unaware.
Why All the Dolls? The Doll Maker!
A while back I did suggest that we'd see Alice visit The Doll Maker during her exploration of Wonderland in Alice: Asylum. At this point in the story she's unaware (consciously) of the evil he represents. Her battle is not with him - but with herself. So he's able to occupy a neutral (?) place in the Asylum representation of Wonderland. I think we might see him running a doll-toy-shop which Alice visits to acquire and upgrade her arsenal of toys-as-weapons.
If we continue along that line of thinking... imagine that The Doll Maker has the full set of Plush Toys - White Rabbit, Cheshire Cat, and an (Asylum) Alice doll.
How might this narrative element fit into Alice's adventure in terms of game play, weapons, or other mechanics? Would Alice collect these dolls or the parts necessary to construct them as a task for The Doll Maker? Does she work to acquire the necessary Chaos Coins so that she can purchase these dolls - and add to her abilities based on attributes that they carry?
Let me know your thoughts on this - and what/if we should have a third plush in the form of (which) Alice - in the comments below!

Joey is working on storyboards for The Circus Realm. And this series of frames got me thinking in a message to Omri...
Regarding the singing... appearing on stage. I love that trope. Would be beautiful/scary to see... from Chaos through to the Circus Realm, little Alice is sneaking around, humming, slowly starting to form a tune and sing to herself. It's something she does to calm her nerves. And perhaps a finished song emerges over this time... until she's walking through some pitch-black space and really starting to sing. When suddenly the lights come up and she's surrounded by all the eyes and faces of the circus?
I feel like it we wouldn't have to try very hard to incorporate a bit more theatrics and singing into Asylum.
Please share your thoughts on that in the comment below. Are there games you've played where, like Alice: Asylum, there's been an element of literal theater or singing integrated into the world and story? Would you like to see more of that sort of thing?

The Fire - Anger- And The Queen of Hearts
From next week we'll move into the Realm of the Queen of Hearts. The manifestation of Anger.
What might we find there? How does Alice's PTSD inform the characters, architecture, and narrative of this critical area? We've already established that Alice's Rabbit will be kidnapped and held hostage by The Queen. Hatter is firmly in her targeting sights and Alice is on a mission to destroy what threatens her...
Collect your thoughts and experiences related to Anger. They will come in handy for where we're heading next!

Would love to see Alice in her Denial Dress!

I love plush toys but I also love action figure collectibles. Those are my favorite.
2019-10-05 12:29:49 +0000 UTC
I would enjoy Inmate Alice with her head shaved!
2019-08-19 14:46:34 +0000 UTC
I would love to see a Hatter plush, especially if he could have removable limbs attached by velcro to represent his workshop explosion (similar to https://www.amazon.com/ThinkGeek-Dismember-Me-12-Plush-Zombie/dp/B001JD9Y86)! My favorite plushies are interactive ones - I have a big bad wolf from IKEA where you can open his belly and it has a tiny grandma in it, and a frog that reverses into a prince. I'm not really into human shaped plushes/dolls although both Denial and Asylum concepts are cool - perhaps also consider a generic Alice doll that can come with a variety of interchangeable dresses? The mock turtle or jabberwock might also make good plush "animals"

I wanna see the enemies!

Straight jacket for sure!

Here's the "Romeos and Juliets" scene:

When it comes to a game with theater and singing, NieR:Automata comes to mind. It has a very existentialist and sombre message in two scenes in particular: one is a robot reimagined Romeo and Juliet, and the other is a boss robot that became an opera singer because of its obsession with another robot.
2019-08-14 11:19:29 +0000 UTC
Definitely would love to see her in a straight jacket!
2019-08-14 04:26:53 +0000 UTC
Either version of an Alice plush would be awesome. What if there was a way to do both? If you could make her dress reversible one side could be a denial dress and then if you turn it inside-out the other side could be her asylum dress. I was also hoping that eventually there would be an entire set of plush dolls. So add Alice, the Hatter, Caterpillar, etc. I also like the idea of the Alice visiting the doll maker and upgrading weapons, outfits, etc. Maybe since he is evil the plush dolls he has could be trapped in some sense and Alice has to free them throughout the game. As she frees them more upgrades become available along with side quests.
2019-08-14 01:33:33 +0000 UTC
Denial Dress suits a plush much better, and it's so much prettier.
2019-08-14 00:25:09 +0000 UTC
An asylum Alice plushie would be amazing! And adding more music and theatre elements to do game sounds so cool, I always enjoy when music has an impact on the story/is linked to it.
2019-08-13 23:01:42 +0000 UTC
Plushy battle: Denial Alice. It's got more fun details to work with. If you have a bald asylum Alice I don't feel like it's obviously Alice. I also prefer the yellow Alice to the classic blue Alice, just to set this plush/game apart from the two previous.
Games with performances: AMR obviously, which I enjoyed. FFVI I think had an opera performed. FFX-2 had one which I think introduced the entire game? I've generally enjoyed their inclusion and think the Circus idea sounds cool.

I choose denial dress all the way! BUT WHY IS OUR FINAL PLUSH? Why not make more?

I would be very happy about an Inmate Alice plush. Hope that more people sign up for them :)
2019-08-13 18:59:33 +0000 UTC
I would love a Denial Dress plush! I love that dress a lot!
2019-08-13 18:45:43 +0000 UTC
Denial dress plush!! Or classic dress
2019-08-13 18:18:26 +0000 UTC
For the doll: Asylum Alice!
Hands down it would make for a cooler looking doll, I love the darkness and the connection it would have between Alice: Asylum and the former Alice: Madness Returns.
However, if you decide to consider other options... I like the suggestion of an Alice doll in the traditional blue dress.
I also enjoy the idea of Alice slowing humming to ease her distress, to build into a song in the dark just to have the lights thrown on and she is surrounded by all the eyes and faces of the circus. When the lights come on, would it be a terrifying unveiling for a fight scene, or something else? Humming/singing when distressed is, indeed, a coping mechanism. Good idea to fit it into the story line gameplay.

I’m so down fo asylum With a removable straight jacket?
2019-08-13 15:21:31 +0000 UTC
For an earlier post: I really love the circus poster and the whole idea of the circus. One question though: who are the people in the costums, performing in the circus?
2019-08-13 14:42:44 +0000 UTC
I'd love Denial Alice, but with a weapon and a chaos symbol somwhere, maybe change the colours on the back? Like, make the colour scheme behind her dark and chaotic, while at the front she's blissfully unaware. Inmate Alice is interesting, but somehow... just doesn't seem to be a good plushie idea. Barring all of that, I'd most like to see her Plushie in the iconic blue dress.
As for the Doll Maker, I love that idea! But, let him be represented in a way that would make it clear to us... as people who know how sinister he actually is, his evil side does still lurk somewhere in Alice's subconscious. The singing in AMR was great, it upped the creepy factor considerably. I wouldn't mind seeing that again.
2019-08-13 14:12:13 +0000 UTC
I would definitely be interested in an Alice Plush, though preferably the Denial Dress Alice. It's creepy enough to see herself as a doll.
2019-08-13 13:39:02 +0000 UTC
As far as theatrical events in games I think the only one I've had was witcher 3 and you got to choose how you delivered the line if at which gave you I think like three different experiences in the game for the show alone. So just a thought.
2019-08-13 13:35:18 +0000 UTC
If you're doing an Alice plushie, which I love the idea of, why wouldn't you do her iconic blue dress? That seems a much better fit, and ties in nicely to the whole series.

I'd actually prefer a regular dress Alice plushie, but Denosl Dress Alice works. Not really sold on Inmate Alice :/
2019-08-13 12:25:52 +0000 UTC
I would love a denial dress Alice plush! I love the design of that dress so much to begin with and think it'd make for a super cute plushie. It'd probably even end up being my favourite out of the bunch!

I can dig an asylum Alice Plush, I’d be curious to see how the hair would work etc. I love the fire themed artwork, very pretty. I don’t mind a bit of theatrical bits in the game, I enjoyed the bits in Madness Returns when they showed up.
2019-08-13 09:38:49 +0000 UTC
Denial dress would be cool! But I'm not sure if I'd be that interested in an Alice plush. I love the side characters more as plush. Maybe a tweedledee/tweedledum set? :)
2019-08-13 08:10:16 +0000 UTC
I'd KILL for a blue dress Alice 🔪
2019-08-13 07:40:12 +0000 UTC
Both,
if the dolls are a succes, maybe you can even make one from every stage.
Aside from the singing, how is the (game) music?
2019-08-13 07:22:55 +0000 UTC
The asylum Alice would fit with the other two because of the muted tones. If you could undo the straight jacket and let it kind of hang undone with the dress underneath that might be good. I like the suggestion of the tops turvy doll so you get two in one. I'm not sure if I would get Ailce as a plush though, the cat and rabbit work so well and I wanted them as soon as I saw them but not so sure about Alice herself
2019-08-13 06:59:37 +0000 UTC
There's a zombie on my lawn is now in my head! That is a really creepy idea for Alice to hum sometimes and drift back into silence. Not too regularly though or it could be annoying
2019-08-13 06:56:26 +0000 UTC
What about the mad hatter as a plush or the caterpillar? Both characters are heavy influences to Alice
2019-08-13 06:51:52 +0000 UTC
I remember in my youth a topsy turvy doll. You hold it one way and the doll had a pretty dress. You flipped the dress up and over and you had a different doll.
2019-08-13 06:48:21 +0000 UTC
SUGGESTION: really not sure about an Alice plush.... both the rabbit and the cat are furry things that lend themselves to being plush.... Alice would be more doll-ish, less plushy? not sure I am explaining this well.... although if you're going to do Alice as a plush the Chibi straight jacket one works best.

I like the Inmate Alice doll. This game has never held it punches. Don't start now I thrive in the dark ;) plus jens design is so cute!
2019-08-13 06:31:43 +0000 UTC
I would say denial dress. I would buy it regardless of which one it ends up being, but I just think it would be nicer to have an Alice with the denial dress in my room rather than Alice in a straightjacket
2019-08-13 06:26:32 +0000 UTC
All for the denial Alice or the traditional blue would be nice too. Creepy her up a bit if we are hinting at a true nature
2019-08-13 06:24:43 +0000 UTC
Yesss it will be cool if it can change dresses. I would love to see a blue dress instead of the yellow. And button eyes would be nice too

2019-08-13 05:42:59 +0000 UTC
I think the denial dress would add a nice touch, especially if the back is going to be the tattered design. I think it gives a nice touch on adding both spectrums of the story :o
2019-08-13 05:14:43 +0000 UTC
Oh Boy, thats one of the hardest decision ever.. I love both Alice doll idea. I'd love to see both or one that could be both like with a wig and the jacked to add.. Idk....
I love the singing idea. I thought maybe she could be humming every once in a while through the gameplay for a few tunes.. ( like the sunflower pet in wow if someone knows it lol) she could still have a cutscene or like quicktime event with a full song as a highlight to her nervous singing... Oh my.. There are so many options.

Puppeteer (ps3)
Make Nine Inch Nails great again
2019-08-13 04:43:24 +0000 UTC
Oh so many questions... well to look at I like Alice in the Denial Dress more, but I can totally understand why there is a sketch-battle because the Inmate Alice is more fitting the Theme. But ... theres everything grey in grey and I think some color is needed so I am for the Denial Dress! I think then the shop of the Doll Maker has a Highlight too!
2019-08-13 04:42:42 +0000 UTC
Old father William is another good classic.
Ive also never heard a tune sung to the one with the crocodile scales ("and welcomes little fishies in with gently smiling jaws") which, in thinking on it, is perfect for the setting. Final answer is that one.

2019-08-13 04:16:05 +0000 UTC
SUGGESTION: I am down for straight jacket Alice like in the sketch. I think it'd be a nice hinting at the sinister nature of the Doll-Maker, without being too upfront to any new players who arent familiar with the ending; and a nice nod to the cult members who are.
In contrarwise, I'd also be down for Denial Alice, but I would need to have that denial dress back with the tattering and the red letter wording.

2019-08-13 04:13:56 +0000 UTC
I like her hair but I don't know about the denial dress. Can we make her a bit bigger than the rabbit and cat tho?
2019-08-13 04:11:18 +0000 UTC
Why not both? Make them slightly smaller and bundle them as a pack together, since it's both sides of alice
2019-08-13 03:37:47 +0000 UTC
I vote for Alice in her Denial dress!
2019-08-13 03:30:53 +0000 UTC
Alice in her denial dress definitely!!!!

2019-08-13 03:28:28 +0000 UTC
In regards to Alice singing, there are a lot of songs to go with. I quite like The Lobster Quadrille, as it seems to have a nice upbeat kind of tune, which would make sense if she was trying to stop herself from being nervous. Or Beautiful Soup is nice, too. Now that I think about it, there are quite a few songs in the Alice books...
2019-08-13 03:21:35 +0000 UTC
Oh my! Both Alice plushes are so gorgeous, but I think the Denial dress barely wins out for me!
2019-08-13 03:17:21 +0000 UTC
+1 for Inmate Alice plush with straight jacket
2019-08-13 03:15:46 +0000 UTC
I am all for Alice singing or even just humming as a idle action if you don’t add in a song! Any excuse to sing while in cosplay lol! I haven’t played many games where singing was involved, but I know in Little Nightmares, The Madame hums close to the end while you sneak around, and it is so delightfully creepy. Once Alice has her full song, would this be a cutscene performance or would we have to “carry the tune” like in Madness Returns, pushing buttons on time? I personally would like it to be a cutscene to enjoy the song and the scene.

I think Alice getting to know the doll maker is a good idea because it’s easy for her mind to hide the knowledge of who he is and what he represents in plain sight, imagine the betrayal she’ll feel when it comes to her, what he’s done, I imagine another trip through the stages of grief just for that, possibly even a breakthrough.
2019-08-13 02:57:04 +0000 UTC
Great idea! Putting Velcro on the hair would easily make it stick to the fabric of the doll's head.
Only issue would be how they'd pull off the arms being crossed in the jacket...hmm. They'd have to have them completely made with the jacket having simple snap fasteners on both sleeves that connect to the back of the jacket.
I'd say it's definitely doable, just depends on the factory they're working with if they'd be willing to do it.

SUGGESTION: I vote for a standard blue dress alice so it's more recognized, for anger I hate everything and everyone and just want to watch the world ignite in flames, (also sadly I can't make this week stream due to the fact I'm seeing Slipknot with a friend)
2019-08-13 02:32:29 +0000 UTC
I've suggested before that we could have the Alice doll in her denial dress but a straight jacket that goes over top of it! I would love that! I love both ideas I cant decided which I would love more! On the topic of Anger one thing that is important is how easily frustrated one can become when in a state of Rage! Imagine Alice becoming frustrated when the Queens guards come after her in packs and she finally loses her cool and goes nuts! Blood spatter and war crys! I do love the singing concept I think it will give Alice and her world more life ❤
2019-08-13 02:32:19 +0000 UTC
Why not both?
Could we have it so we can turn the dress inside out to take her to and from the asylum? Do not know how to do the shaved head (Velcro?).

2019-08-13 02:31:59 +0000 UTC
I think hinting to Bumby's involvement isn't a bad thing, but I think having him be overtly there as the doll maker is too heavy of a hand. Besides, him giving her tools to help her through the landscape of the deteriorating Wonderland seems a little counter-intuitive to the idea that he's the one who destroyed it and Alice's psyche to begin with.
2019-08-13 02:31:22 +0000 UTC
Both, if this is the final plush why not go big? Why not have Alice in her denial dress that is wearing a wig, underneath the removable wig and dress, asylum Alice, with a cute removable straight jacket.
2019-08-13 02:30:41 +0000 UTC
Well, the game "Crypt of the Necrodancer" is themed on the beats of the soundtrack.
There's also something like in "Sniper Elite 4" where firing your unsuppressed rifle to the timing of the noise made by the cannon so other enemies don't get alerted is pretty clever.
Really when I think of "literal theater or singing" in a game...I think of rhythm games, which idk would fit into the theme of this game, but who knows? "Kingdom Hearts II" did it with their Atlantis world and it was fine.
Would love a stealth section where you time your movements to some noise as to avoid alerting antagonists to your position. Then, pull a "Batman Arkham" sort of stealth kill.
Hopefully I understood the question correctly...and that my answer was equally comprehensible.

Denial dress is my preference, but would it be possible to have both with a removable wig and change her clothing like an old cabbage patch kid or is that too much?

Inmate Alice plushie 100%
2019-08-13 02:14:47 +0000 UTC
I would looove both Alice Plushies, but i would prefer the insane head shaved one first because its a play in Madness Returns, but i would also love to see Alice from the first game, or a Queen if hearts would be bomb :D
