Chainsaws and China Cups

Dear Insane Children,

Were I sharing this with any other type of children I'd ... well, I'd not share it! Blood and violence ahead!

Today we have a collection of weapon design ideas from Alex. With blood! Yay!

Of what's presented here, Alex says the following:

I feel as long as every weapon has a unique use on the roster, and the weapon has a fun gameplay strategy to use, it's welcome.

If the weapons are to be earned, they'd serve well as rewards for narrative milestones and mid-boss / level boss battles. The boss battles could be connected to the weapon gained by defeating them.

And obtaining a weapon can serve as good story beats.

I think we need balance between classic weapons that are symbolic to the series, and introduce fresh weapon concepts into the mix.

I feel if we base the majority of weapons on real world toys, we're wasting the "wonder" of Wonderland. However, I love the idea of young Alice using toys and what's available to her when she is "defenceless" at the start of the game. Love the marble idea in stealth sections Omri.

The Victorian-era medical/asylum world is full of its own horrible weapon inspiration too.

I'm sure we'll arrive at an interesting final weapon load-out.

I've had a bit of play with getting some weapon deets on paper.
Attached.

Rather than start from the physical object / weapon in Alice's hand, I wanted to think of combat options, and interesting / fun mechanics in-game.

Then apply a physical weapon to the combat option.

I've attached some weapon concepts for primary and secondary firing types, plus some details on how they could perform in-game.

All fast and loose and here to thrash about, but here to get the conversations rolling.

Have also attached a concept for a "Mad Hatter's Table Setter".
A weapon pulled out of the testing labs of the old mad bloke himself, which I had a bit of fun on.

Some really wonderful concepts contained in there. And presented in a way that really helps to sell the use cases, modes, and effects.

I have to admit I laughed out loud at the image of Alice chainsawing that Card Guard. It's so funny to think of Alice running around cutting her enemies in half with that thing - obligatory DOOM-style "putt-putt-putt vvrrooooom!" sound effects - I might even ignore that it's a terrible anachronism.

But I'll leave it to you kids... Can Alice have a chainsaw?

And what do you think of the other concepts presented here?

What's the mix of weapons you want to see? New designs? Previously seen designs? A mix of both? And what about "magical" vs. "realistic" (at least as realistic as a weapon in Wonderland might be)?

We look forward to your thoughts in the comments below!

Chainsaws and China Cups

Comments

I'm in love with the ability to pelt them with hot tea cups haha.

Very cool! I would like to see a weapon that can change it’s range or basic function based upon collecting tokens, maybe some sort of industrial, pre OSHA, flamethrower that does ice, fire, hot/cold tea, whatever.

I LOVE the Tea Saw!!:)

I’ve thought before about something more like the weapon of a pair of scissors. I like to imagine the guards are paper-thin cards and would absolutely topple on top of each other when Alice “cuts the deck” so to speak. Maybe it would be a rather “base/starter” tool with some upgrade, but I’d like to think of the sound of freshly sharpened pinking sheers. I love the concept everyone else has brought here. I like the chainsaw idea but I worry something feels off about it for Alice.

Forget about Alice in chains we got Alice and a chainsaw! Seriously though a chainsaw might feel a bit off and O.P but for the cup gun why not call it clean cup?

Great ideas though I'm not a fan of the idea of the chainsaw. It seems a bit out of place with the theme and style of Alice and Wonderland. I do like the idea of the Tea-cup-cannon though. :)

A tea grenade launcher with an integrated chainsaw? Well... SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! But for Alice it seems to don't fit really, because (in my opinion) young Alice shouldn't use weapons which need as much physical strength as needed to swing a chainsaw. The vorpal blade is still fine, cause a knife is more speed based than strength based (to use some RPG terms).

Love the tea cup idea and using toys at the start. Things found around the world make more sense than the chainsaw seems to

Except for this being s prequel to AMA, so it's not so much 'old weapons' as she's getting them for the first time -- although, yes, this wouldn't be her first visit to Wonderland. She just hasn't been when it's this dangerous yet.

SUGGESTION: Maybe the chainsaw idea could be combined with the whip weapon that was showcased on one of the AMR Beta trailers, but which didn't make it into the actual game -- a chainwhip type weapon that becomes more jagged and distorted the more insane Alice gets, to the point where it can even whip back and hurt her too. The benefit would be a wider AoE, and perhaps bleeding damage (DoT) to enemies. The more nuts Alice becomes, the less concerned she might become with surviving an encounter, or with being 'little miss nice girl.' How much more so if she gave in to Shadow Alice's temptations to 'rip and tear' down her tormentors? Combine with an effect like Hysteria Mode's temporary invulnerability at the right time, and you could get complete devastation. And as has been pointed out by American in his post, the design could be inspired by the tools at Rutledge more than the toys of her time -- things seen in glimpses that would be so easy for a child to misinterpret, like the things seen in shadows. Additionally, when Alice isn't using the chainwhip, it could blend into a belt or her waist ribbon for storage.

Setting aside its anachrony, I don't care for the design of the chainsaw. The tea-setting version is whimsical and does feel like it fits into Wonderland. If we have carry-over weapons (aside from the Vorpal Blade which is a must), I feel like we would need to see Alice use them in a different way than the other games. We want to show her growth, and if the pepper grinder plays the same in AMR and Asylum then it defeats that purpose. So, I guess I'm on team NEW weapons? I still like the idea of toys as weapons though.

I would love to have the sniper blade return! Loved killing card guards from a distance in AMA. I'm not too fond of the idea of other weapons returning, though. This is our opportunity to think of new an da creative concepts, not return old ones. Plus, no weapons were the same in the first two games and it wouldn't make sense to start that now.

Love this weapon concept! Alice absolutely must have a chainsaw !!!!

I love the idea of this Tea-cup-canon! So funny! But a chainsaw? Nay... that´s not Alice´s style and doesn´t fit to wonderland either. It´s too brutal, too hack and slash... That´s not fitting in. I also have to say, I would appreciate to se the vorpal blade and the pepper cannon once again. Or the hobby horse? maybe with new designs? That are weapons in Wonderland! :-)

Very nice ideas. Especially MH table setter, it looks awesome. Crushed cups turning into teeth is mindblowing. Most of all I like the returning of weapons from the first alice game. Madness returns while looking pretty and having a lot of different areas was pretty repetative IMHO because it basicly only had 4 weapons. So I really like moving towards more weapons and more variety in how to deal with the enemy.

LOVE the name Tea-Saw haha :-)

I really like the alt-fire idea for the Pepper Grinder- I think that it’s a fresh update to the weapon, that could help it fit into the new game. Maybe add a lore reason, like it being upgraded by one of the NPCs? Maybe as an early-game weapon- like “hey here’s your old weapons, we designed new upgrades for them.”

Daniel Linsley

Nice work, guys! Loving the weapons! For me, the vorpal blade has just become iconic. Please keep it in! I'm not a huge fan of the deck of cards. I thought the pepper grinder was much cooler. The tea setter is a nice variation on that though. I must say that I don't much like the chainsaw idea: I feel like throughout the game design so far it's been kept in mind that this is a younger Alice, then all of a sudden we throw it out the window and give her a chainsaw. It feels a little incongruous to me. I'm not sure about the ice wand either. The Alice universe has lots of whimsical things in it, but this doesn't feel like it fits in somehow. SUGGESTION: Completely random thought: what about including a giant icing piping bag as a weapon? It could be used to place a big glob of icing down between Alice and certain enemies. If the enemy tries to walk through it they might get stuck for a while to allow Alice time to work through harder-to-navigate areas or lay in with ranged attacks.

... especially good at starting conversations like "why did you hit me in the face with a cup of tea".

Rosuav

I want that table-setter in its non-weapon form IRL. It would be a great conversation piece,

Rosuav

The Vorpal Blade is my favorite of all the weapons, so would be awesome to have that in Asylum, too. I like the playing cards and the chainsaw as well. The Mad Hatter Table Setter looks cool too, I assume it will be like a little bomb launcher of sorts? And the ice wand would be cool, but perhaps that's a bit too magical? I personally prefer the weapons to be more realistic, though it could be cool to have the ice wand maybe in the more Wonderland-y stages of the game.

Definitely not Adam Driver

I would love to chainsaw some card guards and love the teacup hurling version too. My favourite weapon last time was the hobby horse cos it just amused me to beat things with it and it made very satisfying noises and the chainsaw concept strikes me as along the same vein

HA! The Table-setter weapon is a fantastic concept. Outlandish, nearly comical, yet edgy and within the aesthetic. Side notes: would love a resource-fueled weapon, like a weapon that uses materials or items from the game world as ammunition. Like, say there was a "goop gun" that uses tubes to suck up oily goop from wherever in the game they would be. That fills the chamber, and firing is possible then. When and if that ammo runs out, a player has to seek the in-game resource again or wait for it to appear in-game again before firing it again, etc.

Connor Sol

So in love with a teacup-tea-filled launcher that turns into a teacup-shards-chainsaw. In. Love. Yes. SUGGESTION: not good for stealth though.. Alice/player would have to choose wisely the areas/timing they use the Tea-Saw in or else risk attracting LOTS more baddies than they bargained for.
