Modular Dresses

Dear Insane Children,

As many of you are aware we're still searching for the right design concept(s) to contain all of our dresses and their powers. I would like to lock dresses to domains because this makes the most sense from a narrative structure and delivery perspective. Many of you would like to access any dress you've collected at any time in the game and use it on demand. As we continue working through this topic...

A quick idea from Omri on the topic of dresses. Take it away, Omri!

Modular Dresses

1. I (Omri) think the dresses should remain Per Realm. That's Alice, it's a trademark.

2. In this way that the player can take out a "part" if it's a golden egg or something from the dress and ALL the other dresses will have the same "Socket" not necessarily same Skull at the back, just the same shaped hole. It can give an edge to the player With their favorite dress AND it's not too complex to achieve technically. i think.

3. For the UI it's just seeing Alice as usual standing but adding a list of "emeralds" that you can pick only One.

4. You unlock each "Power" after you got the dress.

5. you can replace the "Power" to every design you fancy most.

6. A GENERAL THOUGHT  We need to decide which ones go in according to How many cosplayers did that look. because no one really did the Far east one or the doll one. those were a waste of looks.

Skull Power!

Sounds to me (American) like what Omri's suggesting might work. Dresss are locked to domains but the power (skull) you picked up with a previous dress can be carried forward to a future area and slotted into whatever dress you're wearing at that time.

Make sense?

What say ye, Insane Children?

Pirate Jam, Mateys!

Arg, ye salty scoundrels! I've just uploaded the 2nd Episode of Pirate Jam 2019 to my YouTube Channel.

It would warm my piratey heart if you'd all head over, give it a watch, click Like, and perhaps share it around your social media channels.

Pirate Jam is one of my favorite things to do each year... but it needs more eyeballs and exposure. So throw your eyeballs at it!

Modular Dresses

I've always preferred to go through games with the correct outfits for each level or domain. 2nd play through is when I used dlc advantages or swap around attire so I'm definitely for the madness returns style dress usage.

I'll be the bad cop, but I think area/ dress combo idea became mainstream now. :( I hope the green glow skull not the final choice. 💀 Do not hate me pls, I like the arts.

I definitely like the modular dress idea!

Good idea

I like the idea!

I am in love with this idea!! Keep up the good work. I don't feel the doll dresses were a waste. Not everyone can cosplay for whatever their reason, but the beauty of the different dresses are for visual aesthetics and NOT for what fans are going to dress up as at cons. To be completely fair, someone may have done these cosplays at smaller cons and you simply didn't get wind of it.

I loved how the dresses worked in AMR with the first play through & then picking whichever dress I wanted, to play again for collectibles. However, relying on cosplay seems ludicrous. The chapter 3 & 5 dresses where my favourite, as well as the original dress from AMR, so calling them wastes of design is so incorrect. I love all the dress designs so far & if I could, I would cosplay all of them at one stage or another.

I'm totally on-board with the skull/rune idea from Omri! I liked that each area had their own dress in AMR, made it very immersive and aesthetically pleasing.

I liked having different dresses in each level on Madness Returns as they linked to what was happening in that area of Wonderland.

Keep each dress to their domain. So that every one can enjoy the beauty of every dress !!!!

I like the idea of dresses unlock after you beat the game! That way, your subsequent runs can be more “customised”.. However, it will be exactly like most of the games.. So having skull gems is actually pretty new way of playing a game. Maybe the gems can extend a “slot” to mix 2 power gems? Like a yingyang kind of gem? :D

I think American is on board with unlocking dresses & gems after beating the game once, he just didn't mention it in the post. This modular design seems like a good compromise to me. I can play like a purist not changing gems but then if I get really stuck, or realize late game that a certain gem would help me I can swap. I respect having input from the Cosplay community, though I feel like the Far East outfit had some love. But if we are trying to prune, that's not a bad place to look for feedback.

I like the narrative bit. It’s a good point, however I think once people beat the game they should be able to go back and choose whatever dresses they want. Cause there’s the original narrative but it might also be fun to kinda role play a narrative of the players own design with certain dresses and what they symbolizes. I dunno, I always err on the side of player choice, especially after the player has completed the original narrative.

I really love this idea!

They want people to be able to cosplay the dresses from the game. More cosplayers means the games get more notice at conventions. They want cosplayers’ input now because the more say we have in developing and choosing the dresses, the more likely we are to cosplay the dresses once the game is released. It’s important for us cosplayers to speak up now so that we have dresses in the final game that are plausible to cosplay. They are not asking us to cosplay their concept designs, though some will choose to, but they are asking us to help them help us and at the same time develop a beautiful game.

Can we at least pick dresses once we beat the game? I loved that concept in the last game cause I loved using Cheshire dress with it's scary aesthetic and the sheer difficulty some of those dresses made on me. I like the idea omri has for while we do it the first time through but when we beat it I would like to be able to change dresses. Otherwise for me replayability will be lowered because if I wanna wear a certain dress I'm stuck to that world.

Personally I prefer being able to choose which outfit to wear when, having the ability to choose the aesthetic or powers I prefer for how I play. However, I do think Omri has a good compromise. Though I am not sure why relying on cosplayers to determine the chosen dresses is good idea. Many cosplayers may be waiting until the game is released (I know with the dress I made I was reluctant to make one from concept art since it could be scrapped or altered a ton in the final version). Also some just take a long time to make or are difficult so make so many cosplayers aren't at that level yet but would like to cosplay the dress they see, they just can't yet.

I'm definitely on the boat of wanting dresses unlocked after first playthrough. I very much play games for aesthetics, and being able to run through the game after beating it in whatever outfit I want is a huge bonus for me. I also like the idea someone pointed out earlier about that leaving room for new achievements and such.

I love Omri’s idea! Super clever.

I like this idea, especially for cosplayers. That way if they don’t feel like making another skull, they can transfer their existing skull to another Alice dress and still be canon to how they play the game. Also, for those of us who like to experience each realm the first time as it was meant to be experienced, we would be given the correct dress at the correct time in the game, but be able to choose the power we’re most comfortable using. However, I still think it would be nice if the dresses become completely unlocked once you beat the game.

I like the skull idea, and I like how the spade fits in the skull

I like the idea of having the dresses locked for the first playthrough, but unlocking them after you beat the game, like in AMR. I love Omri's idea about the switchable powers. I know that was something I wished I could do in AMR, since I loved certain designs more than others, but the powers that went with them weren't always helpful to me as a player. This also lends itself to achievements: "playing the entire game without switching powers", "playing the entire game with only x power", etc. It also allows potential for DLC powers, since there wouldn't have to be a whole dress behind it.

I loved the far East dress from AMR tho 😭 just saying...

Cherrie Wu

I really hate the locked dresses idea. If the initial experience is that important, maybe make them "unlocked" after you defeat the game the first time? That way, those of us that want free choice of dresses don't have to be stuck wearing what the game wants instead of what we want. One of my favorite things about MR was being able to choose my dress or playing it story-mode if I CHOSE to...

Destiny Jenson

I'm still hoping for the ability to change up dresses in case say you wanted to do the whole game wearing her regular dress.

V--R

I love the idea of having an interchangeable dress part. I agree that the dresses should be locked to each realm, it fits with the previous games. Maybe the dlc outfits break that and you can use them anywhere you fancy?

I really like the idea. It adds a lot of replay value. Not knowing how the levels will be designed, or what powers these emeralds will bestow, perhaps there could be hidden paths and features that only a certain combination could access.
