FTH/BTS will be the tag/name/whatever I'm going to be giving this new series, where I post the raw, uncolored scans of the original art to Forward, The Horizon and talk about it a bit.

So, Page One. A big deal.

Truthfully, this came together pretty quickly in terms of concept. I knew I wanted to play fairly close to the vest on the first page, which generally meant either tight close-ups, or long shots. The tricky part was figuring out the layout. Tall, skinny panels are not exactly a hallmark of my work, but somehow I landed on it and I think it works really well. Maybe I'd been flipping through some McFarlane Spider-Man issues or something.

This might be some of the best foliage I've ever done. Granted, it's the first page of a new project, so I'm certainly giving it my best shot, but I'm still really happy with those trees, branches, bushes, etc. It may seem like a silly thing to be proud of, but it's not exactly something I put a lot of focus on when I was drawing for fun while growing up.

Perhaps you're wondering why the sun isn't inked. That's really just a technique to help sell the brightness. Granted, there's no black lines around anything in real life, but particularly when you in the sun, it can have a real dulling effect, so instead I just penciled it in to let myself know where I wanted to put it in the coloring stage and then just "painted" the sun in in the color stage.

I think that's about all I have to say on this one. I hope you enjoyed it. Talk to you next week!
