JL8 #8 - Creator Commentary

JL8 #8 by Yale Stewart

I apologize--again--for the delayed post. The holidays have my internal clock all screwed up, and I completely forgot yesterday was Thursday already! Anyway, here's this week's JL8 Creator Commentary. I hope you enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas!

Firstly, I do like the gag that Mr. Schwartz was literally standing right next to the boys as the events of last strip unfolded, so Bruce has no leg to stand on when it comes to denying Hal's allegations.

Speaking of Hal, it's kind of fun that he has no actual dialogue in this strip, but he still "says" things with his body language. It's a little self-congratulatory, but I think it's worth pointing out. The same also applies to Clark and J'onn, really.

Truthfully, I think most of the notable stuff in this particular strip IS the art, for better or worse. On one hand, I think Bruce is starting to fully take shape, and look a lot closer to how he'll eventually end up, though he still has the kind of out-pointing ears.

On the flip side, good Lord, how barren the classroom is. I really had no idea what I was doing at this early stage; one could argue I STILL don't really have much of an idea, but I think later iterations of the classroom feel a bit more "true."

Unfortunately, I think that's all I really have to say about this strip. It's admittedly something of a "bridge" strip--the interlude between the set-up in #7 and the payoff in #9--but it's a nice little bridge. As a side note, I believe this was the strip used as the headlining image for the iO9 article that launched JL8 into the stratosphere (relatively speaking), so that's something.

Well, I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend. I'm looking forward to good food, Christmas movies, and reading some comics. I hope you all get to enjoy whatever it is you're looking forward to yourselves. Take care, everyone. Until next time. :)
