A new series: Panel of the Day

As you may know, I'm currently dealing with a bout of bronchitis that has pretty effectively knocked me on my caboose; it's pretty hard to pencil and ink when you're violently coughing every 45 seconds. However, if I can't be productive at the drafting table, I figure I can find other ways to create some entertaining content.

A little background: months ago, I discovered the YouTube channel "Cartoonist Kayfabe," whose marching orders are "Read More Comics." Obviously a message I can get behind, it wasn't until my recent attendance of HeroesCon where I really began to take the mantra to heart. I came home from Heroes with a backpack full of new books, and decided I wasn't going to let myself fall into the habit of allowing a giant pile of books just decay on my nightstand as I amass newer and newer content. As such, I decided to  "Read More Comics" in earnest, and began a regimen of spending at least one hour per day reading comics. I've already made my way through about 22 separate titles, ranging from single issues to omnibuses, publishers ranging from indie to mainstream to manga, and time periods from the late '30s to last week's new releases.

Most recently, I was working my way through my copy of "Jack Kirby's The Losers," which has been on my "to-read" pile for longer than I can remember. As I was reading, I was being struck by panels left and right: the power of this one, the composition of that, the subtlety here, the bravado there. I started snapping shots of these individual panels on my phone, just for future reference, and then it dawned on me: why not make this an easy little piece of content while my health is crummy? Hence, "Panel of the Day" was born. For this series, I'll be posting a panel that specifically caught my attention, and do my best to explain what impresses me about it. Granted, it's nothing fancy, but I love talking about thing I like, so it seemed like an easy piece of content that I can produce while I'm under the weather, and might even be a cool way to expose people to comics--or even cartoonists--they may be unfamiliar with.

Anyway, it's just a fun little project I've cooked up. I'm not sure if it'll last beyond my bronchitis, but if you enjoy it, please let me know in the comments, either here or on the actual post. The first one's already live: a panel from "Our Fighting Forces" #154 by none other than The King himself, Jack Kirby. I hope you enjoy!

P.S.
I literally cannot recommend "Cartoonist Kayfabe" enough. If I could make my own comics-centric YouTube channel, it would look almost exactly like that. Run by Ed Piskor and Jim Rugg, it's just two great cartoonists talking about comics and art that they love, and most importantly (for me, anyway): no toxic BS. No videos about why this thing sucks, or why that thing is failing. Just videos about why this thing is great, or why you need to check out that thing you maybe never gave a look before. Comics content for comic lovers. Please check them out via the link above. The only content warning is that there is some strong language, but that's what happens when people get passionate. I hope you find it as awesome as I do.
