PANOPTES INTELLIGENCE ANALYSIS SYSTEM V1.3

ANALYSIS DOCUMENT BY OPERATOR RANK 4 FOLLOWS

The astronomers, astro-navigators, and stellar cartographers of numerous cultures trade stories of apparently naturally-formed space objects which, by unexplained means, evade them (or attempt to) when approached.

The simplest practical explanation for this, and the one borne out by testing, has always been that the objects are natural phenomena. Some sungrazing comets will break off fragments at unexpected angles inside of a planetary system on that can superficially resemble a spacecraft making a retreat. Exotic exolife has been known to colonize and move small networks of asteroids, as well as to shy away from explorers. No one has ever found a haunted meteoroid.

The reason that idea of the “runaway rocks” and their “unexplained” natures are still so widespread is that the stories are amusing. They are spacer legends baked with the superstition of travelers’ tales and flavored with the chaotic undercurrent of urban myth. They resemble an older impulse to tell stories about islands that never get nearer no matter how close one sails.

The Covert Operations Group’s capture and discovery of an unmanned Vanaa space probe disguised as a meteoroid has upset our understanding of the “runaway rocks.” It is not merely well-camouflaged and it did not just succeeded in evading capture for some time; it is ancient. Dating by the ratios of radioactive isotopes, it would appear to have been roving the stars since roughly 3500 BC, some centuries before humanity invented the chariot.

There is every reason to believe that this disguised probe was observing and relaying information to the Vanaa’s Five Worlds for the entire intervening time. It brings to mind the stories of comets portending or witnessing great events in history, ones long preceding the advent of space travel.

No method currently exists to remotely detect this form of observation probe.

Comments

After reading this and thinking about it, it raises so many questions about the Vanaa it's hard to know where to start. Why did the Vanaa allow humans to attain starflight? Did they choose to let it happen or get distracted by other matters? Why aren't the Vanaa so stupidly advanced compared to humans that even now humans are comparative children? They have at a very rough quess a 5,000-10,000 year head start on humanity. How have the Vanaa evolved and changed socially, politically possibly even physically over the thousands of years before humans joined the interstellar party? Did that impact the Vanaa's willingness or even ability to let humans off Earth?
