Page Commentary No. 296

Gunwild: So this is the page we didn't talk about in order. Which is funny because it's significant, and I'm not sure how much I can talk about it when not using too many words is one of the best things about it...

Psu: Me neither actually. I had kinda forgotten about this page so seeing Maddy's face in the second panel is actually quite a shock to me. Like... I'd actually forgotten I drew that so now I get a little bit of what the reader might've felt. How old would you say Maddy is?

Gunwild: Oh I enjoy leaving things like that tastefully vague... just in the lifetimes of my own family, people's average life expectancy have radically changed, y'know? Who knows what aging will work like in the space-future? She's young enough that she PROBABLY hasn't faced disillusionment enough times to get used to it. Not that you should.

Psu: I think that's important right? Like... I think Maddy and Feti are both characters that have some naïveté. Did I use that word right? Anyway like... Maddy and Feti were pretty good true believers in the honor system but it's shaking them up in different ways. Also I'm not saying that Cassiopeia is a realist, relative to them, but maybe a system where it's okay to stab someone because of perceived sleights needs some rethinking. And rethinking things is really hard.

Gunwild: I'll let you know if I ever get around to trying it. Fortunately I've always been right about everything the first time! But y'know, it's important to see the way things are and ask "Why?" and then get upset when the answer's not good enough!

Psu: I think it's the mark of a good person when you realize you might be wrong, you're willing to change your mind. And I think Cassiopeia learned a bit of that too. She's definitely been on less heists ever since this scene. The space ship heist ended up doing good right? But was it the right thing to do?

Gunwild: If the inciting incident were cut-and-dry we wouldn't have two protagonists.

Psu: Duotagonists?

Gunwild: Deuteragonists, I think.

Psu: Another word I should look up but I fear if I do I'll find out I'm wrong.

Gunwild: I won't look either, in case I am. This is a good system!

Psu: It has never done any wrong, ever.

Yes, very good composition.

I think that "naïve" is precisely correct with Maddy and Feti (and probably huge swathes of the young officer corps). One of the selling points of the military life is the "romance" and "adventure", so playing that to the hilt snags the young unfortunates before they realize that a lot of that life is actually regimented and dull.
