To clarify, the reason is that the term "transsexual" ignores the separation between sex and gender. It implies that in order to be trans, you have to get/want to get bottom surgery. Nowadays, we understand a separation between sexual characteristics (sex aka your chromosomes, genitals, etc) and gender identity (gender aka fashion, societal expectations, pronouns, etc). So, the term transgender is preferred since it is more inclusive but it's generally shortened to just trans people since transgender people is a mouthful.
