Gunwild: And then Maddy fell and splatted. SERIES OVER.
Psu: Not that it was going to happen in our comic, at least not in the first couple years anyway, but I always paraphrase this comment I heard from Neil Gaiman. It went something like... go ahead and kill your character. Lots of interesting things happen after your character dies.
Gunwild: Tch, that's easy for him to say. He created one of the most popular depictions of death in modern literature.
Psu: And American Gods was practically predicated on a major character dying but living out the rest of the story as a zombie. So that's neat too. Anyway, seems like it would have been a significant escalation for Cassiopeia. We talked a lot about what exactly they meant from their dialog here, and we know they both had a lot fo double meaning between them.
Psu: At least narratively, we wanted to get across that against their self interests, they didn't want either of them to die.
Gunwild: Well, both of 'em have personal integrity, which is such a huge component of what I (and I think you) conceive of "honor" as being. And neither of them wants to kill somebody they don't gotta! It's a really common theme in comics - or it used to be, when superheroes were less killy. We hit on it again in that duel-y arc I demanded we do.
Gunwild: Clearly I enjoy repeating myself.
Psu: We touched on this before too, that Madison may have, while tracking Cassiopeia, gained some understanding of Cassiopeia's overall MO. And if the two were to ever sit down and talk properly there'd be some interesting observations to share. But here of course, Madison still has a job to do and it's something she's worked her entire career to uphold.
Gunwild: Anyway, readers, go watch Lupin III! He and Inspector Zenigata are always at odds, but they never try to kill each other 'cuz that's not how they roll.
Psu: Still, I do wonder how many of our readers ACTUALLY thought we might kill off the most popular character in the comic.
Gunwild: Eh, maybe one. Little did they know we were really gonna kill off Zeke!
