Animals have more control over their eating patterns than most people realize, hence why if you give different cats a giant bowl of unlimited food some will feast until they get obese and some will only eat as much as they need and never to the point of obesity. Also, cats and dogs can get depressed and anxious (like literally, sometimes they have to take medication for it) and that can cause them to starve themselves. Pigs are also as smart as 3 year old human toddler, so that alone should tell you about their intelligence and awareness, although they are likely to eat just about anything. Animals are fascinating.
