Comic Preview: Heavy Lies the Crown

Comments

I'm going to respond to the character retirement prompt on the main site, but do it here because I am A Shy and also A Too Lazy to Sign Up for Another Place to Comment. I have an almost pathological dislike of characters "ending," whether it's through death, retirement, what-have-you. I will always, always want to go for the "and then they rode off to have more adventures" kind of capper for a story. It makes me feel weird sometimes, because probably the most common piece of DM advice I see is "you should kill more PCs, so they know its dangerous!" I gotta tell you, if my character died in some random dust-up it would kill my interest in playing faster than pretty much anything else. All this actually rather informs my character designs, interestingly enough. I tend to make characters that are tough, and that are adventuring for the fun of it rather than a single plot goal. I like being the second to other characters, helping to push their plot along and enjoying the ride. I think it's one reason why I like long-lived races such as elves so much. You can be there essentially for a more mortal character's entire life story, and it's just a small phase of your life; you've got plenty more adventures to have. (Actually...now I kind of want to play an elf who is friends with a human family, and basically is there for several generations of stories as a supporting player)
