Handbook of Erotic Fantasy: Infidelity

You guys remember my ill-fated raven familiar Viigar? Dude died easier than a red-shirted stormtrooper, but that wasn’t through any ill intent on my part. I was all manner of fond of the little dude, and properly annoyed with his many unfortunate deaths. This is, I think, becoming of a good master.

If you abuse your minions, knowingly send them to their certain doom, or force them to wear a revealing two-piece and massage your bunions, then you should probably expect some kind of comeuppance. I’m not one to pry into another couple’s relationship, but methinks there’s something unhealthy going on between Summoner and the hot pink eidolon Rouge. In particular I fear that the clause which reads, “The eidolon’s physical appearance is up to the summoner,” is being sorely abused here. Rouge was probably some kind of multi-headed hydra beast before she struck her bargain with that bespectacled halfling horndog. If that’s the case, it’s only natural that she would want to spend her evolution points giving Summoner a cuckold’s horns.

For me, the truly interesting part of all this silliness lies in the relationship between PCs and companions. If you control more than one character, the metaphor of “I am my PC” begins to break down. You threaten to become a sort of secondary GM, controlling the actions and personalities of multiple critters, and thereby fracturing your in-game persona. I think that has the potential to be interesting design space, but I’m frankly unfamiliar with the style in practice. At all of my tables, companions wind up being RP’d by the GM. The player may get to make tactical decisions, but dialogue and out-of-combat shenanigans tend to come from behind the GM screen.

That brings me to two questions:

1: Have you guys ever seen an unhealthy relationship between minion and master?

2: Do you think it ought to be possible for a class feature like a familiar or an animal companion to work against its master?

I did see this. It's my character in fact, though deliberately so. My third character was a chaotic neutral mermaid who had an eidolon that was a lawful good eldritch abomination undersea thing. It looked like a sea apple if sea apples had glowing red eyes and a (very bad) British accent. The mermaid was something of a lazy and laid back drunkard who would spend her entire day loitering in public fountains and chatting up passer bys and the eidolon was a self-righteous and myopic lawful-stupid paladin-equivalent. They argued about everything. Where to camp. Where to sleep. What to eat. What do do about the bounties put on their heads. Who is responsible for going into a dark room to look for traps and enemies first (The Eidolon was more expendable, but the mermaid had by far the best AC in the party and a pretty good health pool as well and was far less liked by the party than the Eidolon). Essentially a toxic relationship where they were bound together as essentially a curse. The Eidolon wanted freedom and could gain a measure of it only through being an instrument of a summoner and the mermaid wanted wealth and power which she could then use to get other people to do what she wanted for her. The idea is that they would grow closer into something resembling a healthy relationship as time went on, but the GM had to quit so we didn't really get to see the end of either of their arcs.

I've had some interesting campaigns with familiars/minions who were antagonistic towards the party for various reasons as well--it can be very entertaining when your underlings start attempting to sabotage your characters without getting caught. We had a demonic sheep in an Exalted game that was constantly attempting to lead us into danger, and was terrible at hiding it, and it ended up being hilarious.

Summoners using their powers to shape their Eidolon based on carnal whims? I have no idea what you're talking about. https://imgur.com/IJbcqUe Nope. none at all. I like the comic, though. Showing off Rouge's figure (not that her outfit didn't do that already) and more Bard shenanigans. I almost feel bad for summoner, though. Almost. But as for those questions? 1) At times, yes. There's one point where my own summoner (pictured above) knowingly sacrificed his eidolon just to learn a bit of information that was a tangent to the mission. I still need to work out their relationship. 2) Yes, in the same way a Paladin should be able to fall: Ideally as a collaborative effort between the player and the GM to explore an interesting story that enriches the game, and only as a punishment when a player is going out of their way to abuse their power despite warnings and hints to the consequence that are communicated to them in-world with reasonable clarity.

That sounds awesome! Keeping her as a future antagonist was really smart, it always helps to have enemies that the party has conflicting feelings about.

Oh Bard. You wonderful bastard. And hell yes. Ive seen an unhealthy relationship. It was a summoner playing in one of my games who expected he could treat his eidolon like a slave. The Eidolon was bound to do so because of the circumstances of their pact, but eventually enough became enough for her. The way this played out was, during a fight with a recurring enemy I had her turn on her summoner and sever their bond. This threw the summoner player off, but the other players had been joking that it was gonna happen for ages. I played up the negatives of severing their pact to make sure he understood she wasnt just getting a free pass. She became weaker and less there quite rapidly throughout the fight. But I made sure he felt it. The others had been kind to her, so she focused solely on him for this fight. The party did win. And the Eidolon was knocked back to her plane; but I ended up having her join with the villainous bro as an ally against the party. So maybe not working against, but she definitely had an enough is enough moment.

Dude is everywhere!

I like how bard is slowly getting passed around, like a cold!
