Whoo-boy! Speaking of Stephen Baxter, his entire "Xeelee Sequence" is worth checking out, imo. It actually has similarities to the "Remembrance of Earth's Past" series in that it explores, over millions of years, Humanity's development though being conquered (several times) by aliens but overcoming and eventually becoming the conquerors of the galaxy, only to then become refugees anyway as even more powerful aliens basically ruin the universe in a war they were waging amongst themselves. And, of course, all manners of wild things are happening in this backdrop...
