FULL WATCHALONG ~ WILDCATS

Wildcats (1986) is one of those movies that’s half underdog sports comedy, half time capsule, and 100% ‘80s chaos. Watching it on YouTube for free, though, we realized we were definitely stuck with the “made-for-TV” cut—whole stretches felt clipped out, swear words got replaced with awkward overdubs (“you mother-flippin’ goofball!” instead of the actual insult), and scenes Kevin remembered from his childhood VHS viewing were just… gone. It almost made the whole experience funnier, because you could see where the rough edges were supposed to be.

Goldie Hawn anchors the movie with that breezy, whip-smart charm only she can pull off. As Molly McGrath, the coach who’s way out of her element, she brings real energy to a role that could’ve been a gimmick. She’s tough, funny, a little chaotic, and completely believable as someone who could win over a team of skeptical teenage boys just by sheer force of personality. Even with the corny script, she makes it work—every locker room speech and sideline meltdown has that Hawn sparkle.

Part of the fun is spotting Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson in their film debuts. Snipes has swagger to burn even in limited screen time, showing off the athleticism and charisma that would make him a star just a few years later. Harrelson is the goofball of the team, already leaning into that dopey-charming energy he’d later perfect on Cheers. Together they give the team personality beyond the usual “ragtag misfits” template.

The whole movie radiates Reagan-era sports comedy energy—training montages, “we’ll never make it” moments, and the obligatory big game where everything comes together. But it’s not just about football; it’s also about Molly proving herself in a male-dominated world, which adds an extra layer of bite (even if the script plays it broad). And that end credits rap? Peak 1986, the kind of awkward, “let’s get the cast to rhyme their names” track that deserves to be preserved in amber.

Even in neutered TV form, Wildcats is a blast. Sure, you lose some of the salty locker-room dialogue, but the energy still shines through. The comedy leans broad, the football action is more “backyard scrimmage” than NFL realism, and yet it’s hard not to smile through the whole thing. It’s a messy, funny, very of-its-time underdog comedy that works because Hawn and her team commit 100%.

Comments

Wow, I actually kinda enjoyed seeing this version again as it took me waaay back to all the other tv edits. Beverly Hills Cop was a top tier example 😆

Scrambles

Oh, no worries. I was just sad for you guys, that you didn't get to see the whole thing.
