Lu family has a lot of influence in court and Lu Changkong is aware of that, so he doesnt want to perform well and have another prestigious role to his family name (But his father wants him to support I think the yellow prince). But that sickly prince made a situation, where Lu Changkong couldn't help, but show his true skills. So the problem was it looked really disrespectful toward the emperor, because it was like he was rejecting the offer made by him. But in the end a lot of officials started persuading emperor to give the position to Lu Changkong and he had to, even if he didn't want to. Anyway, that is how I understood it. ๐
