The Plot Development of The Punk and The Pigeon

In its first incarnation, The Punk and the Pigeon was inspired byThe Maiden and The Selkie by Heather Dale.

In the original storyline, the Barista (the original version of the Punk) spent every lunch break scattering seeds for the pigeons that live on main street as he (the Barista/Punk originally used he/him pronouns rather than they/them) talked to the birds about his troubles. The Birdlord (the original version of the Pigeon; was still a pigeon, but was originally going to be either a lucerne or a lahore) watched him scatter seed and listened to him talk, and fell in love with him.

The Birdlord was in love with the Barista, and wanted to be with him, but could only transform into a human for a single night, after which his magic would be used up completely and he would die. The Barista protested that he wanted to be with the Birdlord, but that he didn't want him to die. The Birdlord says he knew of another way, but that it would turn the Barista into a pigeon forever. The Barista said that would be just fine, let's do that.

The third act was always pretty muddy, and was one of the main reasons I switched my inspiration from The Maiden andThe Selkie to The Princess and the Frog. In one version, the Barista had a friend who was a witch who helped turn him into a pigeon. In another version, it would turn out that there was a Land of the Dead for all the feral pigeons, and that if the Barista travelled into it a found/met a McGuffin, he would be transformed into a bird.

It was also originally a choose-your-own-adventure format comic. There was an option that the Barista could choose where they turn the Birdlord down, and an option where you could tell the Birdlord to go ahead with the 'turn into a human for one night then die' plan.

I'm glad I tweaked and edited it until it became the version that it became, but its fun to remember all the versions it was!
