His New Year

Community Short Story

“That was a wonderful New Years celebration wasn’t it Glen?” Leslie told her boyfriend.

He was pretty much passed out at this stage, moving in and out of consciousness in the passenger side of the car. She had opted not to do any drinking this year she was too focused on Glenn, her mind pre occupied with a mixture of excitement and anticipation for what she inevitably expected to unfold. She looked back on him in the rear view mirror, her attention quickly drawn to the dark patches over his jeans, the clear tell tale signs of an accident.

This wasn’t the first time She had seen him in this predicament, it was to be expected at this point. Whenever he went out partying with his mates he was prone to wetting. That wouldn’t matter so much by itself as a lone problem, especially because It was more embarrassing to him then it was to her. She only attended about half of those functions anyway. No, it was a mix of things, a cocktail brewing of all her boyfriends inabilities to show any signs of maturity or growing up.

They had been high school sweethearts, he was such a caring and sweet lighthearted young man. A big goof ball who knew how to have fun, run off with his mates but always told her that he loved him in his own ways. But as they matured and moved in together after college things took a turn. She stopped seeing all his little quirks as cute and minor they had become a big problem. His laziness, carefree attitude had prevented him from getting a job or even his license. She was surprised he even managed to graduate college, his grades were slipping so hard and fast she had to sacrifice part of her own studies just to make sure he stayed well enough on track just to make it through.

She was convinced the only reason he chose to go to college was to be with her in part, but mostly just to attend the parties. But now the parties had mostly stopped, birthdays become more mature dinner parties or lunches. Not the big massive things they once were, but for Glenn he could never enjoy that kind of thing. So when the big holidays rolled around like New Years he went all out, going in hard drinking whatever he could lay his hands on until he would come stumbling over to Leslie with pissy pants.

He wasn’t normally accident prone, it was just at these events when he had drunk too much but his whole demeanour, the inability for him to grow up, painted a worrying picture for their future. Leslie was wanting kids and Glenn still hadn’t even proposed to her yet. Even with all their problems she would say yes, after all she adored him. She just wished he would look in the mirror one day and realise it was time to be a man. Last year she had given him an ultimatum, he had until the very last day to admit his faults and prove he was ready to act like a mature adult.

But that of course never happened, like a broken clock his pattern of behaviour continued. The job search lasted only a month, a few interviews and he was quickly rejected based on his lack of experience. He felt stuck and had expressed that feeling too Leslie but he refused to take any advice, offering him an unpaid internship at her office. But he said that was too humiliating and refused to do any as he quoted ‘volunteer bullshit’ he insisted on paid work. Eventually she stopped bothering trying to change his ways, she would just ride out the year until she could put her threats into fruition.

She had never mentioned the consequences only that he would regret it and if he didn’t agree then she would kick him out of her house and that would be it. She didn’t even know what the punishment be for his childish behaviour, it wasn’t until one of her friends mentioned to her that his behaviour reminded her of a toddler that it clicked. As the months drew on she put her plan more and more into effect, her special locked room that she paraded as a private study which was kept under lock and key began to change. More and more as it looked like Glenn wasn’t going to pick up his act she started changing it to look like a nursery.

If by some miracle he did some last minute turn around then it could be a nursery for a future bundle of joy. She would just need to get the furniture swapped out for something more suitable sized. She realised there was a demand for adult sized baby furniture on her quest through the internet looking for suitable carpenters. By December the room was fully furnished, draped in a sky blue wallpaper with a fuzzy white carpet. Adorned with a large four poster crib that dominated one side of the room and a large changing table along the other. A diaper genie for all his stinky diapers that he would be forced to use from now on and a closet with dungarees, onesies and bloomers plenty of clothing for any adorable little toddler.

Finally Leslie pulled into the driveway, it was late they left quickly after the countdown and the dashboard showed it to be 1am. Her mothers car was in the driveway of her place and the lights were still on, she knew that she would be awake she helped plan all this after all. She took one look back at her boyfriend, completely passed out in his wet jeans, the stain now noticeably larger. Leslie shook her head making a mental note to have the car seats cleaned in the morning. She reached over and undid his seatbelt, his head and body quickly slumping over she cheekily eased his thumb into his mouth and watched with amazement as he quickly started sucking.

“My sweet little boyfriend, tomorrow you will wake up and no longer have a girlfriend.” She continued whispering gently into his ear as she stroked his hair. “But don’t worry, you’ll have a mommy instead, which is exactly what a little baby like you needs.”
