Just kidding, been working on Smol Kobold Garden so much I haven't been able to plan for a fun Halloween update this year. But fret not! I come baring a load of new updates and changes to share with you.
I find one of the main appeals of chao garden is being able to customize and make your chao your own. So when it came time to making the smol kobold garden area, having a fixed area is expected but what if you could customize it in a similar manner as well? I have laid the groundwork for a very dynamic and large area. Every time you create a new save file the level is randomized with different terrain and lakes. But I can also set fixed areas in this randomness as well. For example, if I have a large waterfall with a large lake at the bottom, I can lock this area around the waterfall to be the same so every time the level generates, the waterfall will be the same. This can be done with other things as well like landmarks and houses.
So, the purpose of this large area is for user placed objects. You will be able to place trees, toys, and even houses for your kobold. Houses can come in many forms, from a fenced off area to a cave or a traditional wooden house, you will be able to set one or multiple kobolds to live in these areas. Houses will be very similar to animal crossing where you can place furniture and wallpapers to customize the interior of the house. Large things you place like houses will be locked to the area and while it can be moved around, the random generation won't change the area around them.
You will also be able to freely edit the terrain similar to games like viva pinata. Your floating hand can be switched out for a shovel where you can dig out the ground to make water or add ground to change the elevation. Changing your environment like this may affect what kind of animals that may start to roam in your garden like with having a ton of water, you may find mostly water animals visiting your garden.
Houses and terrain editing will NOT be available in the first builds as there are some bugs here and there that I need to iron out, but they should become available as Smol Kobold Garden matures in Steam early access. I'm working on getting the first build ready and making a goofy trailer for the game, soon we will all be able to raise your very own kobold. Get excited, okay?
