Smol Kobold Garden

In my spare time I've been trying to get into the Ape Escape series of games. I never got into them when I was younger but always wanted to. It's easy to notice its low poly geometry and think how easy it would be to make something like it while playing. Something about colorful low poly games inspire me to want to make something like it. That's when it hit me.

A long long LONG time ago I proposed a game that would be complimentary to Kobold Garden called Tiny Kobold Garden. While Kobold Garden is a somewhat demanding 3d game for pc, Tiny would be a simplified 2d version for mobile devices with the idea of transferring your kobolds between the games. The art was going to be pixel sprites but the issue with this was I've never done pixel art before, it was something I would try and learn as I go but I underestimated pixel art. It was too much for me at the time and I felt it deviated from working on the full game so I put the idea aside, wanting to come back to it another time eventually.

I've also been planning to have something for April fools day but the only thing that would come to mind would be some sort of comedic animated video that would take way to much time to make, time away from the main game. So what if instead I remake Tiny Kobold Garden, but instead of sprites I use a low poly 3d style while using the original kobold model. It would be called Smol Kobold Garden to differentiate it from Tiny. I feel I could get an early version of this done pretty quick, maybe even before April fools.

Even though its a game meant for mobile devices, it can still can be played on pc too. So the idea here would be to finish an early access version and release this on Steam for April fools day. Then work on it in tandem with Kobold Garden and release it on mobile platforms when fully complete.

The only issue then would be Steam. Even if I finish it before April first, it has to go through a review process that can take up to 1-2 weeks. So the new idea would be to have a simple gameplay trailer of the game for April fools day, like it's some kind of joke. Then I actually release it a week later. No one will know what hit them!

This all may be kind of crazy but it just might be crazy enough to work. I'll still be finishing up the bottom of the barrel area but it should be done in no time. So I'll try to be posting progress on Smol Kobold Garden as April approaches too.
