Affinity Photo - Blend Ranges Explained

I was thinking of building such lists as well an have them as an additional Patreon reward :)

Hi Greg and Kevin, that sounds like a great idea. I will do a Tut on that next. :) About forgetting: Same here, my Friend. I actually watch my own Tuts some time to see how I did that effect. As long as you know where to find it and that you can do it, it still counts as knowledge ;)

Hi Greg, yes, I agree about the refreshers once in a while. I was thinking of listing Olivios videos with the techniques in them to remind me. I think the Displace filter is about ensuring that an underlying texture (like a brick wall) influences the objects above it. I have tried various blend modes but none are quite the same.

Kevin, I just tried the Displaced filter on a portrait. I seems to give it a paintbrush stroke effect. I’m not sure what it is doing but I would like to learn more. Maybe, it wouldn’t make a whole tutorial but add it to ‘tips’. Olivio has given us some great tips over the years, but I find if I don’t use them — I forget them. Maybe we need an occasional refresher, once in a while.

A great explanation Olivio, thank you. Like Greg, I haven't really delved into blend ranges but they seem to be very powerful. It goes to show that there is more than one way to achieve an effect. For another topic could I suggest the Displace filter. I have been trying to create a graffiti effect on a brick wall (well, actually a road to recreate the Tour de France look) but without much success. I have watched other videos but it just doesn't look realistic when I have a go. Thanks.

Thank you, Greg. Yes, i don't use it that often either, but it's nice to know that it is there, and is some cases it gives really nice and fast results. The perlin trick is nice too - i need to do another video with a collection of these tricks :)

Olivio Sarikas

Thank you, Olivio. I’ve never played much with the blend ranges before. It’s not clear when I need them but definitely worth playing with in the future. I like the Perlin noise trick. I’ve seen old photographs get like that (I think heat and moisture affect the emulsion).
