News on Patreon Crediting/Tiers

Hi everyone

As you have probably seen, in most of my latest videos the Patreon crediting system has changed. We discussed this in Discord too, and I also received many recommendations from you about how other creators do it. Thank you so much for your support, recommendations and understanding!

Crediting system:

I haven't fully implemented a new visual system yet, but for now the way it will likely work going forward is like this:

Short videos:

• Either no credits (if very short), or compiled "squished" credits as the end, where all Paid members (except Matches) are credited in clusters, along with mods etc.

Long-form, episodic videos (e.g. R500):

• Flare Gun Patreons (tier 4) only receive credits in the opening of the video. These may be listed as "Executive" Patreons. This is a common approach by many creators. The end of the video has "squished" credits like in short videos, though the duration of the credits might be a bit longer. Flare Gun patreons may or may not be repeated here.

Very long-form videos (e.g. "Mastering Interloper"), or the final episode of a long series:

• Flare Gun Patreons (tier 4) only receive credits in the opening of the video. At the end, ALL patreons are credited individually and read aloud, including Matches tiers.

The visuals of how this is presented might change when I have time to review it a bit more, and the implementation into R500 series etc might not start right away. Most likely the new system starts, in practice, around November.

Patreon names:

Going forward, once the new system is properly implemented, you will be credited using your Patreon name. I know some of you have sent me messages asking for custom credits, and have a different name credited than listed here. Regrettably, this is too hard to keep track off, especially when some members also change their name on the patreon website, and I lose track who is who. Copying in your Patreon names directly also assures I don't forget anyone, as doing it manually means sometimes a name is missed. Other creators have recommended this approach.

I will make an exception for Flare Gun supporters, as they as unique, contacted directly, and are updated somewhat rarely.

So if you are registered on Patreon with one name, but would prefer to be credited in videos with a different name, please consider changing your handle on Patreon so I can just copy-paste it.

Should your name be missing in my videos, please let me know! It is very important to me that everyone is credited appropriately.

Notes on the Flare Gun tier:

As you know, there is a 4th tier above the regular 3 patreon tiers (Matches, Torch, Flare) which is the Flare Gun tier. As explained in a previous post, these are executive supporters who have given custom pledges or contributed to the channel uniquely one way or another.

There isn’t a strict ruleset on how one becomes a Flare Gun patreon, but in general the criteria below is what I use.

One of the following:

-          Custom pledge above the $12 Flare tier

-          $200 Lifetime Contribution or higher

-          Patreon for 2 years or longer, regardless of tier

-          Unique other contribution (e.g. modding, artwork, donation).

I only update the Flare Gun list once or twice a year (or when custom pledges are made), and it has been a little while now due to the kids. When I do it next, I know some of you will be upgraded and I always DM you directly (expect this soon). If you feel you should be a Flare Gun supporter, but I have not yet contacted you, you can of course contact me as well 😊

Flare Gun tiers are effectively the same as Flare tier, except they get unique credits in videos, and they also get the Flare VIP room on Discord regardless of their actual patreon tier.

YouTube Membership:

The early access perks from the YouTube membership will cease in November, and only cosmetic things like emotes will remain. There are several reasons for this. A YouTube membership costs $2, making it effectively the same as the Matches tier, but you get emotes and badges as a bonus. However, YouTube takes an astounding 47% cut, compared to Patreon's 8% cut (+3% transfer fee). It also is additional work for me to track a different support system, where members cannot be contacted directly (unlike Patreon).

So, going forward, YouTube membership is best considered an addendum to Patreon, and exists primarily for viewers to have badges next to their names, highlighted text in live streams/premieres, and unique emotes.

I also need to update some Patreon website info, which I will do once I have a chance.
