FBS stands for Football Bowl Subdivision, which is the highest level of college football in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The FBS is made up of the largest schools in the NCAA. These teams are eligible to compete for the National championship (thru ranking) and to play bowl games at the end of the season. These are the teams and stadiums you’ve been exploring.
There is a whole other division called the FCS or Football Championship Subdivision.
These schools are typically a small step down from their FBS counterparts, and the league has its own playoffs and championship game. These schools are typically smaller but plenty of NFL players have come from FCS schools and many of those schools have graduated to less powerful FBS conferences. Right now there are 129 schools in the FCS (134 in the FBS).
It would be fun to explore these teams too. Appalachian State was a FCS school when they infamously beat Michigan in the Big House. They are now a FBS school.
