The senior year courses weren't strictly required, so not many people attended, but each class always had a few eager students who remained spirited amidst their sleepy peers.
Xia Lingyan was one such diligent student. She immediately noticed the boy who followed the teacher into the classroom.
The boy had long, tousled hair, wore plain black-framed glasses, and looked somewhat gloomy at first glance because he was looking down. However, upon closer inspection, the lower half of his face revealed well-defined contours, a prominent nose, and rosy lips. His skin was exceptionally smooth; he would be quite handsome without glasses.
While Xia Lingyan observed Ling Chunann, he was also observing her. Being attractive to both the antagonist and the protagonist, Xia Lingyan was undoubtedly a beautiful girl with a delicate facial structure and large, innocent eyes that shone with naivety.
Seemingly noticing his gaze, Xia Lingyan gave him a friendly smile.
Ling Chunann looked away and found a corner in the classroom to sit down. He also noticed that the protagonist's group hadn't attended this class.
Seeing the new student settle down by himself, the teacher didn't say anything nor did he plan to introduce him. Accustomed to the disorganized state of the classroom, he opened his teaching plan and laptop, cleared his throat, and began the lecture.
Xia Lingyan was bright and popular, which undoubtedly contributed to her popularity. This was the first time she greeted a strange boy and was ignored, which piqued her curiosity greatly.
In a small classroom, Xia Lingyan sat towards the back, while Ling Chunann chose the very last row in the corner, only two rows away from her—not too distant.
During the lecture, Xia Lingyan quietly turned to look back at Ling Chunann.
Ling Chunann noticed her gaze but didn't pay much attention to it and laid his head down on the desk to rest. Despite his zombie king's formidable recovery ability, he was still mentally exhausted from the previous night's ordeal.
Disappointed by his lack of response, Xia Lingyan turned her attention back to the lecture.
When the break came, students who missed the first class trickled in for the second consecutive compulsory course.
Qi Yang habitually headed for his usual spot only to find it already occupied by a boy he hadn't seen before.
With his glasses off, Qi Yang could clearly see the side of Ling Chunann's face—his long eyelashes were the first thing Qi Yang noticed.
"Qi Yang, what are you doing standing there? Class is about to start," someone called out, waking Qi Yang from his daze. He realized he had been staring at the boy's profile for several minutes. Clearing his throat to cover his embarrassment, he impulsively sat next to Ling Chunann.
Chen Yue rushed into the classroom just in time to witness this scene and frowned.
She remembered clearly that on the zombie king’s first day at school, he sat in the corner—the very spot Qi Yang was heading to. When Qi Yang entered the classroom, a conflict arose because of Qi Yang's popularity and the newcomer’s mysterious and gloomy aura. Eventually, Qi Yang conceded and sat elsewhere, but the newcomer lost the class's favor.
Chen Yue was in a hurry to come and support the newcomer. She had read the novel; although the zombie king was in love with Xia Lingyan and had a soft heart, a genuine show of goodwill could easily open his heart. She believed that given Xia Lingyan's indifferent attitude towards him, she could definitely win him over.
But Chen Yue hadn't expected such a twist so soon.
Why was he sleeping instead of reading? Why didn't Qi Yang wake him and start a conflict but instead sat next to him?
A confused Chen Yue sat next to Xia Lingyan, only to find Xia Lingyan looking back, seemingly at the newcomer.
This couldn't be, Chen Yue thought, shaking her head to dismiss the thought. Xia Lingyan must be watching Qi Yang, not the newcomer.
Chen Yue clenched her fists—she would win the newcomer's heart.
"Host, the protagonist has been watching you," reported 098, aware that Ling Chunann hadn't fallen asleep. "Also, the supporting characters Chen Yue and Xia Lingyan—they've been watching you too."
"I know," Ling Chunann replied nonchalantly, maintaining his position with his head on the desk.
For Ling Chunann, following the general plot was enough. Even if new task bearers appeared, their first thought upon encountering someone from a novel wouldn't be that he was a task bearer, but rather that it was due to the influence of a transmigrator. This was the main reason why Ling Chunann had left Chen Yue with memories of a transmigrator.
As the second period was about to end, and Ling Chunann showed no signs of waking, Qi Yang, maintaining a friendly demeanor towards his new classmate, gently tapped his shoulder. "Classmate, it
’s almost time."
Hearing the protagonist's soft voice, 098 felt it strange. The plot didn't go like this! Was it because of the host's charm that the protagonist felt an automatic friendliness towards him?
Ling Chunann groggily opened his eyes, propped himself up, glanced at Qi Yang, found his glasses tossed aside, and put them on just as the bell rang. He picked up his books, smoothly got up, and squeezed through the narrow space beside his seat to leave through the back door.
The protagonist, still lost in that fleeting moment of connection, stared blankly as Ling Chunann left, taking a long time to realize he had forgotten to introduce himself.
After leaving the classroom, Ling Chunann's lips curved into an amused smile. The protagonist's reaction was indeed interesting.
Thinking Han Fenglian would take a while to come pick him up, Ling Chunann slowed his pace. Just as he descended one flight of stairs, he was called.
"Classmate, please wait."
The crisp, spring-like female voice sounded somewhat shy, unaccustomed to striking up conversations.
Behind Ling Chunann were Xia Lingyan and Chen Yue. The voice belonged to Xia Lingyan, while Chen Yue seemed annoyed at being preempted but quickly masked it, giving Ling Chunann a sunny, friendly smile.
At the moment, playing the brooding youth, Ling Chunann didn't speak but just stared at Xia Lingyan.
Xia Lingyan seemed startled, instinctively looking towards Chen Yue. Seeing this, Chen Yue's spirits lifted. Although some details had changed, the overall situation was still the same, such as the zombie king's unusual attitude towards Xia Lingyan. After a moment of irritation—why did this woman get such unconditional love from such a powerful being without doing anything, while she got nothing?—Chen Yue’s mood cleared, and her smile brightened considerably.
"Classmate, you're new here, right? May I know your name? If you don't mind, we could show you around the school," Chen Yue offered.
Chen Yue's intentions did not escape Ling Chunann's notice. He frowned slightly, understanding the woman's schemes, and he never underestimated a woman's jealousy.
From Chen Yue's ability to gain Xia Lingyan's friendship despite her dissatisfaction, it was evident she was quite manipulative.
However, Ling Chunann had no intention of intervening. The original character liked Xia Lingyan, but he didn't. His mission was to save her; he only needed to ensure her safety at critical moments. The twists and turns before that were of no concern to him.
Although he had been observing Chen Yue, Ling Chunann's gaze had never left Xia Lingyan. Hearing Chen Yue's voice, he slowly shifted his gaze to her. "Sangyu. I have other matters, farewell."
Chen Yue, catching his attention, beamed, achieving the first step in her plan.
Xia Lingyan, puzzled by Chen Yue's excitement, glanced at her a few times and then watched Ling Chunann's retreating back. Sangyu? That was a rare surname.
After leaving the school, Ling Chunann walked two more streets to make sure no one was following him before slipping into a car waiting by a small path. "How long have you been waiting?"
Han Fenglian reached out, removed the glasses from Ling Chunann's face, and leaned in for a passionate kiss. Seeing his cheeks flush, he quickly made a contrite expression before Ling Chunann could get angry. "I didn't leave."
Holding his breath, Ling Chunann glared at the man. "Drive."
Han Fenglian, successful in his cheeky endeavor, started the car while seemingly casually asking, "No classes this afternoon, right?"
"You already memorized my schedule," Ling Chunann said without looking, knowing what the man was hinting at. His next words were— "Don't even think about it."
Before he could speak, he was interrupted. Han Fenglian, with a pitiful look, pleaded, "Baby..."
"Shut up, I want to sleep. I'm tired," Ling Chunann cut him off again.
He just wanted to say… there were no classes in the afternoon; they should go back and rest well. Han Fenglian touched his nose, realizing he had indeed been too much last night, causing his darling to develop a psychological shadow.
But thinking of his darling having someone else in his heart, he couldn't help himself, especially since this person was even in the same class!
At that thought, Han Fenglian's sense of crisis surged. Should he do something to declare his territory? Or should he also get a student ID and accompany Ling Chunann to school? This idea seemed highly feasible to Han Fenglian.
