"What's wrong? Do you have a problem?" Chu Lingling asked.
Han Chen quickly put on a smile, "No, just thought of something. I have things to do, I'll be going first."
Watching Han Chen's departing figure, Chu Lingling was a bit puzzled, but she quickly shifted her focus, "Oh no, I haven't signed up yet."
That afternoon, the news was filled with articles condemning Ling Chunann's terrible relatives. Whether intentional or not, the photos released by the media made those aggressive relatives look particularly fierce, while Ling Chunann appeared like a pitiable figure in contrast.
Before long, public opinion overwhelmingly sided with Ling Chunann, and some enthusiastic individuals even exposed the information of those terrible relatives.
"Look at the great idea you came up with! Now we've got nothing and lost even more. I really should have never believed your nonsense!" Xie An, who had begrudgingly bought a ticket to return to his hometown, pointed at Chen Feng's nose, "Last time was your brilliant idea too, saying how easy it would be to fool the kid. Turns out he's sharper than anyone."
"I spit! I merely mentioned it, and you went all in. Now you're blaming me?" Chen Feng wasn't someone to be easily pushed around and started arguing back with Xie An.
The station, being a place of high foot traffic, attracted a crowd eager for a spectacle. Soon, some recognized them.
"Aren't these the despicable relatives who tried to bully a child? What are they doing here?"
"It looks like they see no more profit to be made and are heading back home."
"How can such people still stand here? They should be arrested and thrown in jail."
"I'm more kind-hearted; I hope they get into a car accident."
...
Unable to continue their fight under the unabashed public discussion, the two, along with their wives, hurriedly made their way to the ticket checkpoint as the boarding announcement sounded.
That evening, just as Ling Chunann got home, 098 reported, "Host, your second uncle's family and your little uncle's family were in a car accident." It even pulled up the news for Ling Chunann to see.
The news headline was eye-catching, "Coincidence? Retribution? College entrance exam top scorer's despicable relatives encounter a tragic car accident on their way home, life and death unknown."
The article detailed Ling Chunann's background, criticized the relatives' character, and finally mentioned the accident happened due to sudden fog, causing the driver to crash into a tree beside the road. The vehicle flipped, and strangely, of the twenty-six people on board, besides Xie's and Chen's families who were critically injured, including the driver, everyone else only suffered minor injuries. Hence the headline.
After Ling Chunann closed the webpage, 098 asked, "Host, could it be someone's doing?"
"Taking revenge for me?" Ling Chunann mused.
"Yes, it's very likely," 098 responded.
Ling Chunann's eyes twinkled with amusement, "Then who do you think it was?"
098 seriously considered. It couldn't be Tang Shouxu, as Ling Chunann had explicitly told him not to interfere, and the male lead, though on good terms with Ling Chunann, clearly didn't have the capability. As for Chu Lingling, despite her friendliness towards Ling Chunann, her family's rules forbade using their powers to harm others, and it was unlikely she'd take such a risk for Ling Chunann.
After eliminating everyone close to Ling Chunann, 098 couldn't think of any suspects.
Ling Chunann then said, "You're right, someone did take revenge for me."
"Who?" 098 asked, puzzled.
"Do you remember the person I asked you to look into when I first came to this world?" Ling Chunann didn't beat around the bush.
"You mean... your... the original host's mother?" 098 quickly realized.
Ling Chunann smiled ambiguously, "Let's go see them."
Upon arriving at the hospital, there were still many reporters outside. Ling Chunann and Tang Shouxu entered from the underground parking, avoiding the crowd.
"Why are we visiting them, baby?" Tang Shouxu, walking beside Ling Chunann, sounded a bit upset.
"As relatives, it's only right to check on them since they're injured," Ling Chunann responded, then turned to Tang Shouxu, "Uncle Tang, do you have a problem with that?"
Tang Shouxu quickly shook his head, "No, as long as you're happy."
He was barely granted permission to accompany his beloved out; what if he was sent back?
The Xie and Chen families hadn't died but suffered significant physical losses, complicating their future lives.
The hospital prohibited media entry, so it wasn't very crowded inside. However, loud cries and wails could be heard from the 8th floor's
corridor, specifically from room 801, where Xie An and Chen Feng were staying.
"The damn thing! How are we supposed to live now without my hand?!" a woman's cry was heart-wrenching, "I told you not to go, and now look, your hand is gone. How am I supposed to live?"
"Mom, you have heart disease. Don't get too agitated," another woman's voice came through.
"Shut up! You harlot! If it weren't for you always egging him on, my son wouldn't have gone to Ancheng, and he wouldn't have lost his hand. You're a jinx!"
"Ha! Didn't you also agree it was a good idea at the time? Now it's all my fault? His hand is a hand, and my leg is what, then? I lost a leg too!"
...
Listening to the quarrel inside the room, Tang Shouxu informed, "Baby, the first voice is Chen Feng's mother, your biological grandmother, and the second is Chen Feng's wife."
Ling Chunann nodded with a smile towards Tang Shouxu, "Got it, Uncle Tang, you're so considerate."
Tang Shouxu patted Ling Chunann's head, "Of course."
"Adults have gone bad!" Of course, 098 didn't voice its criticism.
Inside the room, besides the Chen couple on the hospital beds, there were three children of varying sizes and a woman around seventy, the grandmother, scolding the wife who, despite her leg injury, retorted from her bed. Chen Feng, with a dark expression, let the women argue as the children cried.
Ling Chunann walked into the room at its noisiest, just as an apple flew towards him. Tang Shouxu caught it and tossed it into the bin, "Baby, are you okay?"
Ling Chunann shook his head and looked towards the room's occupants.
The old woman, holding her thighs, cried and shouted, "Such misfortune! A daughter-in-law hitting her mother-in-law! How did my son marry such a shrew? Do you want me to die? Divorce her, son, we'll divorce her when we get back!"
Chen Feng finally reacted, shouting, "Shut up!"
This worsened the situation. The old woman immediately sat on the floor, wailing, "My life is over! You're yelling at your mother. Your sister is gone, and I only have you left. How could you treat me like this? You're trying to kill me!"
"What did you just say?"
As the old woman continued, a voice interrupted. The old woman, seeing an opportunity, said, "Come here, young man, side with your grandma. My son, I raised him with so much effort, and now he's got a wife who's against me and even yells at me. Tell me, does he have any filial piety?"
Ling Chunann smiled at her but didn't answer her question directly, "You mentioned his sister passed away, what do you mean?"
"His sister was also unfortunate, died young," the old woman's expression turned complex, "Ah, never mind, young man, help me judge this."
"Mom, be quiet!" Chen Feng loudly interjected, then turned to Ling Chunann, "What are you doing here? To laugh at us?"
Ling Chunann smiled at him, "Second uncle."
The old woman's shrill voice immediately rose, "You're that dead person's wretched kid?!" As she spoke, she charged at Ling Chunann, seemingly intending to slap him.
Tang Shouxu didn't care if she was elderly; he pushed her away before she could hit Ling Chunann, and the previously lively old woman fell into a corner, groaning in pain. The children's crying stopped, and they huddled together, afraid to move.
Ling Chunann pulled Tang Shouxu aside, who reluctantly stepped back, "I didn't use much force."
Hearing the man's sullen remark made Ling Chunann's previously serious face crack a smile.
Chen Feng and his wife were scared by the old woman's act, "Why are you hitting people? Call a doctor!"
Ling Chunann remained still, turning to Chen Feng, "Second uncle, what you mentioned earlier, about my mother dying, what's that about? You said she ran off with another man, didn't you?"
Chen Feng's expression stiffened, then turned angry, "What does it matter to me whether she's alive or dead? You don't acknowledge us as relatives, do you? I lost my hand trying to find you, and you didn't even care."
"That's right, you wild brat, forgetting even your own family name!" The old woman, having received no attention after her theatrics, got up but didn't dare approach Ling Chunann again, "That dead girl of
yours, good riddance!"
Glancing at the two jumping in anger and then at a woman on the adjacent bed with a troubled expression, Ling Chunann smiled, "Excuse me, then. I'll be leaving now."
Exiting the noisy room, Ling Chunann glanced at the end of the corridor, then said to Tang Shouxu, "Let's go back."
Tang Shouxu followed Ling Chunann's gaze, then looked back, "Aren't you going to check on the Xie family?"
"No need," Ling Chunann shook his head, "Let's go back."
